About this listen

Why do so many people talk about writing a book but never get the job done? Why do so many start books they never finish? And why is the final product often so much less than what editors and agents want? Because writing is a process, and no steps can be omitted without impacting the quality of the work. As best-selling author William Bernhardt explains, editing begins before you start writing and doesn't end until the book is in print (if then). This book guides writers through that process, explaining what's worth doing and when to do it. With his usual straightforward, demystified approach, Bernhardt explains how to produce a book of exceptional quality.

Good, helpful information.

But.

The title implies the book will be about editing an existing manuscript. However, rather than Excellent Editing: The Writing Process, a better title would have been The Writing Process: Prewriting, Outlining, Drafting, and Editing.

I'm in the third draft of my novel, and I imagine most people reading this book pick it up because they, too, have a manuscript to edit. But at that point, this book tells you, "Here are the things you should have done from the beginning." Not especially helpful for your current manuscript--but it's at least a helpful guideline for when you start on your next one.

Good information with a misleading title

Well narrated, nicely organized, and useful even if you're more interested in nonfiction writing than in fiction.

Very informative!

Thanks Bill. You did it again. I couldn't wait for this to come out in an audible content. As usual, you have another winner on your hands and another one in my writing mind

I''ve made part of a living through writing for several years, but never wanted to write a book. After listening to Excellent Editing, I understand why. I have more respect for those people who have shared copies of the books they've written with me. Most of all, I wanted to better understand the editing process.
Understanding editing gave me a new way to look at my own writing process. Thanks for that, William Bernhardt. I think I'll check out other titles in the Red Sneaker series.

Worth the Time

I love this series. This addition is just excellent. I usually listen to one lesson a day but with this one, probably in part because I'm at the ending stage of a book I've dreamed of writing for a very long time, I couldn't stop listening. I think I suggest that method for this one, actually. It is what you need to know, practically speaking, about the editing process. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The author who doesn’t learn much from this book tried very hard not to. Thanks, Mr. Bernhardt, for a very helpful book.

Excellent work.
