About this listen

Margaret Truman thrills again with Experiment in Murder, a riveting installment in the Capital Crimes series!

A Washington psychiatrist is killed in a hit-and-run on the street in front of his office. Suspicion quickly focuses on one of the doctor's patients, and Mackenzie Smith is called in to defend her. Then information emerges that links the slain shrink to a highly secret CIA mind-control project.

A young man, the perfect mind-control subject, is programmed to assassinate the front-runner in the U.S. presidential race. As he zeroes in on his target, other government agencies become aware of the rogue CIA program. Mac's client, the accused killer, seems to be the key to infiltrating the project - she's become the perfect spy.

But the assassin is programmed to kill anyone who threatens him or his organization - even Mac and his wife, Annabel.

Lack Lustre Imitation of Margaret Truman Books

I found the narrator passive. The story did not have the pace or depth of the early Margaret Truman books.

Disappointing

I am an enthusiastic fan of the earlier Capital Crimes series. I was not favorably impressed with this entry in the series.

I rarely have a strong negative reaction to narrators. Dick Hill's narration of this book was very unpleasant to my ears. His staccato delivery was jarring. I was able to listen to the entire 11+ hours of this book. but I doubt if I would buy another book narrated by him.

(Warning - possible spoilers)

The story involves mind control sponsored by the CIA, a number of uninteresting and despicable characters, and a high body count. Mac and Annabelle Smith appear in the story just enough so that they can be mentioned in the publisher's synopsis.

Liking the earlier books is no guarantee that you will enjoy this one. Proceed with caution.

Don't bother

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Can't think of anyone who would. Convoluted story line, not told well

Would you ever listen to anything by Donald Bain and Margaret Truman again?

NO!

Would you be willing to try another one of Dick Hill’s performances?

Probably not. I found the narration ploddingly slow and over enunciated. Altogether a real snooze.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Experiment in Murder?

Whole story was too choppy and convoluted to have any continuity or suspense. I doubt it could be saved. It was simply a very bad story and plot. Not up to the previous stands set in the early books in this series. A real disappointment to Miss Trumans fans.

Any additional comments?

Won't be reading anymore of these so-called collaborations. Too many good books out there to waste any more time on such sheer tripe.

I have enjoyed every story so far up until this 1.

I don't like stories where the bad guys win and there is no resolution. I also don't enjoy the stories as much when Mac and Annabelle are only very remotely on the sidelines. I'm disappointed
