Publisher's summary

Having finally reunited, and fought off the Deceiver for now, Mary and Michael race up the Michigan peninsula to meet Astra before police forces catch up with them. But the closer they get, the less Mary is willing to trust a woman who by her own admission will do anything to finish the Deceiver - even if it means killing Michael and Mary to try again in another life. As they face their final battle, Michael's loyalties are tested, making him vulnerable just when Mary needs him most.

Good story and love the narration

This was the second book in the series and you had to listen to or read the first one to follow along. I thought the narration was great and love Sophie Eastlake so it was easy to listen to. The characters were strong and good, the interaction between them was amazing. The story grabs you and keeps you looking for more.

Another excellent set of books by Thea Harrison.

I couldn't put them down, and now they're done, and I wish I hadn't read them so fast.

Boring

Although the narrator was fantastic, the story was excruciatingly boring. I kept finding myself having to go back a whole chapter to listen again because i was so bored I lost focus.

Too dark for me

I agree with previous reviews. It took forever to develop the characters. Then the story pits innocence vs evil and evil is really bad and has tons of resources. I was surprised evil hadn’t taken over the world yet and was still working on the US president since evil had sooooo much stuff and resources. The heroine annoyed me she kept saying things inconsistent with her actions and kept going over the same things. Plus, another - “can’t tell you now, will explain later” drove me crazy. They are driving in a car, not on a race track and he can’t talk. It also seems that the writer got her characters into impossible situations and then used previously unknown powers to rescue them. I love her elder series books but hated these 2. I struggled to finish them

I love Thea Harrison, however

The story just moved a bit slow for me. Literally, I cranked it up to 3x the speed and got through it quickly. It's interesting just too slow for me.

Lackluster Conclusion

I enjoyed the first novel, a story of a woman's discovery of her past lives and her reunion with her soulmate as they fled from an ancient enemy. I eagerly picked up this second volume and then...it sort of spluttered. At some point in the book, I found myself thinking it wasn't really the main characters' story, and then one of the main characters made precisely this realization right there on the page, which didn't help the situation. I'm not as sure as I want to be about what happened between Astra and Lucifer, but I bet it would have made an interesting story. Not a romance! But definitely an interesting fantasy story. As for Michael and Mary...they seemed less and less human the more I read, which made my connection to the story silp further and further away, even on top of my realization that it wasn't their story to begin with.

Well-written and intriguing worldbuilding. I've enjoyed many of this author's books and highly recommend her. But this one just didn't seem to have worked out. That happens to the best, so I've got no worries about picking up another one of Thea Harrison's books!
