Publisher's summary

Someone's out to get Los Angeles bookseller Adrien English. His best friend has been viciously murdered, now he's getting weird phone calls and sinister gifts from a mysterious "admirer." The cops think he's trying to divert suspicion from himself - with the exception of sexy and homophobic homicide detective Jake Riordan. Is Riordan really such a great detective - or does he have a few secrets of his own? Is his offer to help Adrien on the level or is he out to nail his favorite suspect - to the wall?

i love the adrien english series....
the mystery is there... and adding the "romance" of protagonists
it works....and the purple prose is non existent!

One of my favorite series.

I love Josh Lanyon, and Adrien English is my favorite series. Chris Patton is a lovely narrator. The characters are easily distinguished and he really catches Adrien’s sarcasm and humor. This is a fun series and I’ve read it a few times.
I saw a couple reviews call it homophobic, but it’s not the book that’s homophobic, but a few characters that are. Adrien deals with them the same way he deals with everything: stubbornness, sarcasm and humor. This series makes you laugh, cry and growl in frustration.
I love Adrien with an E.

Fascinating amateur sleuth

Adrien English, mystery bookstore owner cum amateur sleuth, is a sensational character—smart, damaged, wry, and a lot stronger than he thinks he is. Josh Lanyon’s writing is funny, rich, and consistently captivating. It takes five books to develop both Adrien’s subtle, danger-driven evolution into a man more at ease in his own skin and the company of his family and friends, and his beautifully complex relationship with big, gruff homicide detective Jake Reardon, and it’s worth every minute—especially given Chris Patton’s spot-on narration. Fatal Shadows sets the stage, but you won’t get the true Adrien English experience unless you keep going.

Yeah! an MM mystery with a well written story

I have listened to a lot of MM stinkers. Its like schlogging through all those terrible foreign films cause its supposed to be gay themed, and then realizing you just wasted 2 hours on another terrible movie. Well this is not that. This is an entertaining book that happens to be MM and not just another vehicle for steamy sex scenes. The story is good. There is actual character developement and backhistory. There is great dialog. The main character is very likable and the minor characters are varied with some depth. And, the mystery was pretty well handled. All this , with great narration as well. My New favorite MM series.

Simple with potential

I love a good mystery, and this one was pretty predictable. That being said, a lot of mysteries are. There are few exceptions. So, I won't hold that against him. If I'm being honest the narrator distracted me with his portrayal of "gay" dialects. It seemed to be one size fits all most of the time.

I do think the series has potential and I'm hoping the next book improves, but this was a nice distraction from my normal listens.

In short, don't set your expectations too high and you shouldn't be disappointed.

The beginning of everything

Where does Fatal Shadows rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

All 5 of the Andrien English mystery/romances rank among my top 20 favorite audiobooks.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fatal Shadows?

The second murder by the person in the skull mask was daring and well-paced.

What does Chris Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Patton brings a clear personality to each of the characters based on the verbal cues written by Lanyon.
