About this listen

It's been one year since all the adults disappeared. Gone. Despite the hunger, despite the lies, even despite the plague, the kids of Perdido Beach are determined to survive. Creeping into the tenuous new world they've built, though, is the worst incarnation yet of the enemy known as the Darkness: fear. Within the FAYZ, life breaks down while the Darkness takes over - turning the dome-world of the FAYZ entirely black. A will to survive and a desire to take care of those they love endure in this ravaged band, even in the bleakest moments. But in darkness, the worst fears of all emerge, and the cruelest of intentions are carried out. After so many months, is all about to be lost in the FAYZ?

Masterful

I have become accustomed to Grant’s writing style over the course of four books prior to this one, and including this one as well. His world is so realistic, capturing the true-to-life emotions and reactions a group of teenagers and children would have to the situations he addresses in his novels. But it also delves into the thoughts we all have had: what if I had superpowers, and nobody to stop me from using them? And what would a group of kids do? Pretty much everything you can imagine and more. I love the intense action, fleshed out characters and their motivations, and the impending sense of doom you get from all of Grant’s books in this series.

What I don’t like about this book is that Grant is too afraid to kill off any of his main characters. He doesn’t mind killing off secondary characters or the nameless kids that inhabit Perdido Beach but he will absolutely not dream of killing someone of importance. He’s killed plenty of people with powers, so it would be unfair to say that non-freaks are any more in danger than freaks. Yet every time a main character or a person important to the story is put in severe danger Grant teases you with “I might kill them, look at the danger they’re in!” before coming up with a way to save them from the situation with moments to spare. My point in this section is that the main characters always end up safe, and that in turn diminishes any value the dangerous situations they end up in might have to the overall story. If I know they will only emerge with cuts and bruises, what reasons do I have to worry for their safety and care when someone that has been there since the beginning actually does die? I don’t have any. They’ll come out the other side just like they went in, with maybe a few new scars.

Finally, the narrator’s voice for this audiobook was the most annoying I’ve ever heard. At first, it was unbearable. I only powered through it because I was traveling and did not bring my physical copy of the book. After a while, I just dealt with it and listened as the story is more important than the voice of the person reading it. Enjoyed the story, loved the plot and the big event at the end and would definitely recommend the book to people. Just maybe not the audiobook version.

Read this Series

The Gone Series is an exciting story from the first book all the way through the series. I could not stop listening to this book. Kyle McCarley narration is how I found this series and I am glad to say I did. Michael Grant wrote a very interesting story. While the premise is copy from other ideas I have read, heard, and seen. They way the story unfolds is very enjoyable. World building for the story is very well written.

Wow...Just Wow!

Wow...just wow....

Fear! Yep this is a fitting title for this installment of the Gone Series.

The dome is changing...growing dark, and soon the kids of the faze will be plunged into darkness. What do you suppose will happen? These are children we are talking about. Children just slightly over 15 or younger. For most their biggest fear is the darkness. Michael Gran did not let us down with the amount of fear incorporated into this book.

In this installment we learn more about what is happening outside of faze - with the adults - and I have to admit this was not my favorite part of the book. I liked being submerged into the world of the faze and not knowing what was happening outside of it. However, this being added to the book didn't take anything away from it either. It was just personal preference.

I am beginning to have mixed emotions with every book of this series I finish. I am getting closer to the end and I don't want the end to arrive. Grant has really created a world I care about and characters I need to know how they are doing.

This series really is one of the best series I have stepped into.
