About this listen

What would the world be like without America?

The attack only takes a few minutes to sweep from coast to coast. When it ends, nearly everyone on mainland USA is gone.

Every policeman. Every housewife. Every trucker. Everyone. A continent free for the taking....

Ted MacInnis is a backup pilot on Air Force Two, over the Atlantic, when it happens. A warrior by nature, he can do little but listen as the radio signals from his homeland fade away and die.

However, one last call with his niece convinces him the attack left some behind. She might have survived, and he makes it his mission to find out. Unfortunately, his first priority is protecting his VIP passenger: Vice President Emily Williams. The woman who might already be the leader of America's survivors.

For some, the counterattack will be violently executed with firepower. For others, surviving in empty cities without adult supervision will be challenging enough. Ted, and warriors like him, will soon be part of the most desperate fight America has ever seen. This is DAY ONE.

Engaging Story, Wrong Narrator

Full disclosure: I listened to this book while it was included in the Audible Plus catalog. My opinions might have been different if it was one I'd paid for.

The good: I was hooked pretty much from the first chapter onwards. The mystery of the vanished people has me intrigued even if it strains credulity. Unlike other post apocalyptic/ teotwawki books, the mechanism of destruction here is more fiction than science, but with this fact in mind, it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The individual stories quickly had me hooked as well, especially the plight of the kids in the mine and the struggles that Navy pilot-turned-bodyguard Ted faces while trying to protect the vice president. This isn't a super deep or dark tale, at least so far, and it's been easy to listen to while doing chores or putting on makeup, etc.

The bad: the narrator is absolutely not the right fit for this story. Don't get me wrong, the pronunciation is good and the dynamics, volume, etc is fine, but the voice itself and the delivery are far more suited to a comedy than a drama. Dramatic, serious, scary, and sad scenes are all delivered with the same comedic lilt as you'd expected from funny scenes and, well, it's just weird. That said, I'm still going to listen to book 2 in the series next since it's also included in the Audible Plus catalog.

Unique and entertaining

Great reading unusual story. Hard to imagine people just disappearing leaving only their clothes behind. Seems like if something can make human life just disappear that there wouldn’t be any animals or any organic life left. If it didn’t take animals where are all the left behind pets and stray soda and cats. Should be more than one pet (dog) left abandoned. Maybe explanation will come later in the series. All in all were entertaining.

Poof, gone

It's an interesting idea. I'm curious as to where the story will go, and will read the second book of the series. A well written story, a wild ride.
Narration was good

…But the narrator!!

I so badly wanted to like this. This plot isn’t bad, but I can’t get past the extremely bad narration and goofy writing. The written dialogue is almost enough to set it down but the irritation narration takes it to a new level. Such a disappointment.

Attention grabbing

I can't wait to continue this series! Solid story line and interesting characters. The narrator has a great voice for this suspense filled story.

So so

Based on aliens invading and diminishing the population. Writing is alright but didn’t keep me glued to listening. MC is with Vice President and she doesn’t sound like someone I’d want leading.
