Publisher's summary
It was a legend in Fear County. A hideous, flesh-eating creature - part snake, part earthbound demon - that feasted on the blood of innocent children in the cold black heart of the Tennessee backwoods.
But 10-year-old Jeb Sweeny knows the horrible stories are true.
His best friend Mandy just disappeared. He also knows that no one has ever had the courage to go after the monster and put an end to its raging, bestial hunger. Until now.
But evil is well-guarded. And for young Jeb Sweeny, who is about to cross over into the forbidden land of Fear County and the lair of the unknown, passage through the gates of hell comes with a terrible price: everlasting fear.

They were called diablos hoyos. Vicious black-furred beasts that fought in the pit with the raw fury and savage ferocity of Satan himself. For their owners, they were a lucrative investment. For the people of Sulphur Springs, Texas, they were the best entertainment they'd had in a long while. For Bowie Kane, they were his darkest nightmare come true.

Story
The rural town of Old Hickory. Tennessee was a quiet, picturesque community...until the O'Sheas came to town. Becoming the new proprietors of the town's only funeral parlor, with the help of their charming patriarch, Square McManus, the Irish family was wholeheartedly accepted by the local town folk. The thing began to happen. Strange things...horrible, unspeakable things...in the dead of night. The sighting of wolfish beasts congregating around an open grave in the town cemetery.

Story
From out of a shadowy backwoods hollow echoes a dark threat from the past, nearly a century lost and forgotten. The rural town of Harmony, Tennessee, possessed a disturbing secret; a secret so ancient that most of its residents were completely unaware of it. Even the last survivors of a vigilante raid long ago have filed the tragic events of that autumn night away, totally unaware of the evil that remains, dormant, but forever patient, among the tall pines and thick-leaved kudzu of a place known only as Hell Hollow.

Story
Josiah Craven had been all but forgotten for nearly a hundred years. To his descendants, he was nothing more than an imposing image in an old tintype photograph and the subject of stories told in hushed tones before the fireplace at night. A traveling mountain preacher who had returned from his wanderings and died under mysterious circumstances - buried in an unmarked grave with a wooden stake through his heart. Dudley Craven had heard the tales, but never believed them...until his plow unearthed an ancient coffin in the center of a lonesome mountain pasture.

Webster's Dictionary defines the word "appetite" as: a) any of the instinctive desires necessary to keep up organic life; specifically: the desire to eat, or b) an inherent craving; an insatiable appetite for nourishment. Of course, there are other terms for appetite as well. Craving, coveting, hunger, lust, gluttony, ravenousness, want, yearning, and passion, just to name a few. South of the Mason-Dixon Line, we call it a "hankering". When thinking of appetite, two supernatural beings come instantly to the minds of horror fiction readers: vampires and werewolves.

It was passed down from generation to generation. The legend of The Dark'Un, the strange beast that roamed Pale Dove Mountain. The dark monster that no one had ever seen - at least not and lived to tell about it - except, so it was said, old Fletcher Brice who lived at the foot of the mountain. No one really believed in The Dark'Un. It was just a story to make a child's flesh crawl.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Not what I expected, but better for that.
I bought this book expecting a cheap horror novel, and got excellent fantastical realism instead.
My only real complaint is a spoiler, but a certain character death came off as cheap and exploitative, and feels downright unnecessary, as if it were added last minute in a later draft. It's the only reason this isn't a 5 star review across the board.
That said, I love the monster, the mythology, the characters, the wild folk magic, and the bizarre denizens of Fear County, plus the war the reader brings them to life with a PERFECTLY chosen voice for this material.
also, this book has one of the best "Hell YEAH!" moments I've read in a LONG TIME.

What is FEAR? Is it a book?
FEAR
By Ronald Kelly
Sam Sweeny glanced back at the kudzu that almost swallowed him whole. Goose bumps pricked this muscular flesh.
“I don’t like this place. I don’t like it at all.”
What is FEAR?
Is it a situation?
10 year old Jeb Sweeny struggles through America’s heart-land with a father so shell-shocked from the war he’s been reduced mentally into his little brother. Jeb’s grandmother’s the head of the family guiding them through country threats of insane-asylums, deed-hungry bankers, lazy sherifs, orphanages, and town bullies.
This great-depression drama is cranked up-ward into horror by the appearance of a MONSTER: a demonic mix of snake & hell hound. The creature's hunting grounds include local farms & places people inhabit.
What is FEAR?
Is it a place?
FEAR is a very good book that suddenly becomes a very great book.
Half way through, our young hero, and a few unlikely companions, decide to travel to the place the snake-hell-hound came from. It came from a place named FEAR County.
Like following a yellow brick road, they are off to, well... not to meet the wizard, but a to meet a WITCH. A Witch who may, or who may not, help them.
What is FEAR?
Is it a thing?
The journey to FEAR County is full of strange dangerous THINGS. It’s an epic journey into enemy territory that hasn’t been tried since Frodo and Sam hiked into Mordor.
The whole tale is told with a heavy country twang much like the wonderful tales of “John and the Silver Guitar Strings”. Actually, though I dearly love the Silver String folklore stories, I wish they had been written as expertly as this book.
This is a truly delightful literary experience that takes you on an epic adventure to another time and a different land with characters you grow to love. After reading so much 'trite bunk' passed off as horror literature, it’s a pleasant surprise to read good literature that can horrify you.
I highly recommend this book.
