Publisher's summary

From out of a shadowy backwoods hollow echoes a dark threat from the past, nearly a century lost and forgotten.

The rural town of Harmony, Tennessee, possessed a disturbing secret; a secret so ancient that most of its residents were completely unaware of it. Even the last survivors of a vigilante raid long ago have filed the tragic events of that autumn night away, totally unaware of the evil that remains, dormant, but forever patient, among the tall pines and thick-leaved kudzu of a place known only as Hell Hollow.

There it would have remained, unrevealed, if not for a handful of unknowing participants. Four kids, bored for excitement during one of the hottest summers on record; a killer on the run, dodging his latest atrocity; and a rape victim on a deadly mission - scarred in both body and mind all have a hand in bringing forth an unspeakable evil from the dark woods of Hell Hollow.

He is a skeletal figure in top hat and tails, brandishing a handful of magical cards and a patented elixir that was brewed in the very depths of Purgatory.

Classic coming-of-age horror

If you like well-written, nostalgic coming-of-age, horror, this is definitely right up there with King's "It", McCammon's "Boy's Life" , Simmon's "Summer of Night", Keene's "Ghoul", and Straub's "Shadowland".

A different kind of horror story

If you could sum up Hell Hollow in three words, what would they be?

A different kind of horror villain.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was not as predictable as one would expect. I rather liked the simple country living and fear of the "good" doctor.

Which character – as performed by J. Rodney Turner – was your favorite?

Doctor Leach. The accent was dead on... no pun intended.

If you could take any character from Hell Hollow out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Have them all at a big table, would be interesting.

Any additional comments?

Different, moved along was entertaining.

One of my absolute favorites!

I really love this book. The storyline is very interesting. The characters are immersive. The whole premise of this book really just takes you in and hooks you. Much like Dr. Leech's elixir, it starts off sweetly enough, but soon, it has you in it's grips and you are lost in its darkness. Topping off the book, the narrator is by far the best I have ever heard. His voice is perfect for these southern-based tales. As a southerner myself, his accent and tone make me forget I am listening to a book, and I feel more like I'm listening to my grandpa tell me a story from his youth.

Engrossing

What made the experience of listening to Hell Hollow the most enjoyable?

Fantastic character development and story. Loved the story-line. Ronald Kelly easily holds his own with, and even surpasses some of, the best authors in this genre. A great find and I will now be seeking out his other offerings.

Any additional comments?

J Rodney Turner was absolute perfection as the narrator.

Southern Fried Coming of Age Creepy Tale!

I picked up this title after reading Ronald Kelly’s “Fear”. I liked “Hell Hollow” even more and J. Rodney Turner is narration perfection! This one gave me vibes of classics such as “IT” and “Stand by Me”. It chronicles the adventures of four pre-teen kids in a small southern town in Tennessee as they encounter a 90 year old horror long thought to have been put to rest and spins a tale around their interpersonal relationships and an odyssey of friendship and coming of age. Kelly’s storyline provides a bit of a different element than the “IT” type story where the kids solely ban together to defeat the antagonist. It brings in older family members for assistance, namely the grandfather who encountered the evil Augustus Leech 90 years earlier during his own boyhood in Harmony, TN. This book relies on good storytelling rather than blood, gore, and shock to spin its’ creepy tale of terror. It’s a simple but engrossing tale that doesn’t require concentration to follow a tedious storyline and it’s an easy listen to keep you entertained while doing mundane tasks like housework. I have no reservations about recommending this book.

A very well done and entertaining tale

A 90 year old threat has resurfaced in the small town of Harmony, Tennessee.

A horror that was put to bed years ago, given new life with the unknowing help of four kids and a masochistic murderer/rapist on the run.

They should have stayed away from the Hollow.

Because, now comes the Hell part…

A very well done and entertaining tale of small town horror with excellent characterizations and an evenly paced, engaging storyline, narrated expertly. I dug it.

A solid 4.5+ Stars rounded up to 5!! I look forward to reading more from this author.
