About this listen

Love comes when you least expect it...

Tressa Buckland likes her quiet life in Port Lowdy, with its cobbled streets and colourful terraced houses overlooking the sea.

Her job at the local paper allows her to pursue her art in her free time, with no one but her tabby cat Ginger Pickles to mind her in Mermaid Terrace. But then the owner of the paper is called away on an emergency, and it's up to Tressa to run the paper for six months. Her first task: find a new part-time journalist.

Dan Byrne is the angriest man in Ireland – or so the readers of his very successful column, 'Dan takes on the world', think. But after a story goes south and he loses his job in Dublin, Dan has no choice but to start afresh. When an opportunity comes up in sleepy Cornwall, Dan and his Golden Retriever Ritchie set off for a new adventure.

For Tressa, Dan's arrival to Port Lowdy changes everything. Tressa tries not to look too deeply at her own life, but Dan sees a story to uncover in absolutely everyone – even her. The two of them couldn't be more different... yet, if they can find a way to work together, they may just breathe new life and joy into this sleepy seaside village.

Finding Love at Mermaid Terrace is a heartwarming new village romance about the power of love and kindness, from the bestselling author of Starting Over at Acorn Cottage.

Kate Forster lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband, two children and dogs and can be found nursing a laptop, surrounded by magazines and talking on the phone, usually all at once. She is an avid follower of fashion, fame and all things pop culture and is also an excellent dinner party guest who always brings gossip and champagne.

Character studies deeper than most romances

Okay, I do agree a little with the other reviewer about the unnecessary event toward the end of the book. Had someone told me about it, I never would have downloaded this selection. Those sorts of events are always a hard pass for me. That said, I always look ahead and stumbled across a reference to the event in the last hour of the book. By this time I was already drawn in and cared about almost everyone in this Cornish village. Further, the event was handled with compassion & didn't become something that haunted me for days. Was it necessary? I agree with the other reviewer that ultimately it was not but stuff happens unexpectedly in life and so should in books too occasionally.

I've loved every book I've read by Kate Forster. I often enjoy the romance genre but can't stand the ones that are too saccharine. I love the way Kate lets us into the minds of the characters to see how they're processing something. It reminds me that most folks need to be given the benefit of the doubt. Rarely do we, as judge and jury, understand someone else's motives/thought processes. By doing so, she gives us a more realistic portrayal of our human character with all its warts.

Quaint love stories

Three couples with real life issues have to work through them for resolution. There is some tragedy but it serves to propel the story in a positive way.

Wonderful story, but

Loved the sweet story. But I did not give it 5 star due to reference to God in negative tone. Could have left that out and story would have been fine.

I love all of her books!

This author builds complex worlds and characters in stories that are heartwarming but not sickly sweet. When you need a break from true crime, and want to be reminded that there is good in the world—even in the midst of the complexities of real life—choose on from her collection.

Love wins!

Loved the ups and downs of falling in love. The misunderstanding they had because of the difficulty we all face when discussing our feelings about each other.

Not bad. Not my favorite story from this author

I think I've read/listened to all of Kate Forsters books now, and this one is probably the least well-written. I do like some of the individual elements of the story though — all the mermaid stuff is fun. And I like that the main character is an artist. The location is beautiful, etc. But the story as a whole somehow falls flat. Don't get me wrong — its not bad. it's just not that good either.

Spoiler Alert

The performance of the reader was flawless but I found the story very lacking and extremely predictable. **Here is your final spoiler alert** Right up to the part where she let the lovely dog die with 20 minutes left in the story. There was absolutely nothing to the creation of the end of the story that made that a necessity.

Protagonist is a brat

I normally love Kate Forster’s books, but I gave up on this one toward the end. Just can’t take the main character Tressa anymore.
