Publisher's summary

DC Scott Cullen finds himself investigating two decades-old cases when a mangled body is found in a barrel of aged Dunpender Distillery whisky.

Two men disappeared around the time the barrel was filled, nearly 20 years ago. As Cullen investigates, he finds himself steeped in twisted tales of family loyalties, lies and professional rivalries. Before he can find the killer, he needs to know whose body is in the barrel...

Narrative difficulty

I enjoy this series but I find I have a hard time listening to the narrator. I don’t know if it’s mixing or the narration itself or if it can be fixed; the voices are fine but it’s difficult to listen to the non-dialogue narration. The narrator drops his voice so it is very low and it often falls into vocal patterns. Even with the volume up all the way I have to strain to hear it and then louder dialogue comes through and I have to turn it down quickly before I max it out again to catch the narration. I found this with all the books that were available, so I think it's just his style or the mixing. I actually his voice, and enjoy the interpretation and story otherwise, I just hope they can fix with adjustments or editing/mixing.

An interesting story

But, man, that Baine is such a pain. His sexism is so beyond what is tolerable today, it is hard to stomach. Somebody demote him PLEASE! A technical comment: the narrator’s soft voice is nice but is hard to hear sometimes even at full volume on my phone. I know the range between Baine’s screaming and Cullen’s quiet musings is wide but surely a sound tech could have adjusted the level to compensate.

Not up to previous quality

3.5 stars rounded up.

I have enjoyed the previous books in this series. I had a hard time getting interested in this one. The characters were all flat and not enjoyable. The story was decent and the narration was good. And I really like the author's Fenchurch series. This is what bumped my rating up by half a star.

I'm sorry the rest of this series is not available on Audible.

good narrator.

Cullen is a bit of a whining guy, and Bain seems quite rational, by his standards, in this one. good story, but easy to guess the killer!! wierd sex scene with a lot of detail about rollung sperm in a knotted condom
