About this listen

Baseball hopeful Bo Crutcher is about to get his shot at the majors. That is, until life throws him a curveball. When AJ, the son he's never met, lands on his doorstep, Bo's life becomes a whole new ball game. He needs help - fast.

Enter Kimberly van Dorn. Hired to smooth Bo's rough exterior for the media, she expects the kind of shallow pro athlete she's used to handling. But Bo is willing to sacrifice everything for his vulnerable son. Kim can train him to hit a home run with the press, but over a breathtaking winter on frozen Willow Lake, she realizes he has far more to teach her about the game of life...and putting love first.

I selected one of the books the Lakeshore series on a lark from my local library and have gone on to read/listen to the entire Lakeshore Chronicles series. It's and enjoyable series when you are looking for light, easy reading/listening.

I’m really loving these characters and this small town. This book is a great addition to the amazing series. The characters are compelling and the plot is unique. I loved AJ and that he has a POV. His character is so well developed, and his action and thoughts are spot on for a twelve year old boy going through the challenges he must face. The ending is perfect. Great narrator. Happy reading and listening!

I enjoy Susan Wiggs' books, but I found this book to be a little slow. Great characters, but not much plot. It just sort of ambled along.

Not very meaty, but a good read. A little too much romance and not enough plot.

Fun Read

I love reading about all the characters in Avalon and finding how their lives are entwined. it's so fun when a familiar character pops up from a previous book in the series. The narration was fantastic. I always forget the is only one reader when Joyce Bean does the performance.

only one reader...WOW

So grateful for all of Susan's books that give us insights to understanding we all make mistakes, we suck at communicating, and if we give everybody a little space we might get the gift of them trust us and telling us their life story. When we hear the stories we understand better why people maybe act the way they do, and it humbles us just like it's so much easier to forgive a family member or someone we know when they make a mistake versus a stranger. Can't wait to get to the next book❤️ and then start all over or maybe go back to one of the other series. I absolutely love the Apple orchard series, it gives such insight to how holocaust, wars, happen and the realities for people on both sides.❤️ please keep writing Susan and following your passions. I'm struggling now with my feral cats, but we're all learning together and praying to find a way to fund Spain and neutering all that come my way❤️.

Would you listen to Fireside again? Why?

Yes. The caracters are very lively and good written.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fireside?

Hard to choose. it is several of them. perhaps the snowman episode.

Which character – as performed by Joyce Bean – was your favorite?

Bo. definately he is simply a fantastic figure.

If you could rename Fireside, what would you call it?

reinvention perhaps.

Any additional comments?

good narrator. She always do a good job and she makes the story come alive every time.

Let me count the ways. This is my 2nd read/listen for this author and definitely my last. The only way I was able to go through it was by putting it on fast settings. The pace of her stories are just too slow for me, the characters are selfish and don't draw me in. This one in particular was distasteful to me because I felt she was too preachy and one sided with her social commentary and views on immigration. By the 1st chapter, I got it illegal immigrants are "undocumented" and "have done nothing wrong", "except went to work every day". A LEGAL immigrant myself, I will leave a debate about those who breach our country's immigration laws for another forum, I will just say that the premise of the story was completely unrealistic. A woman who lived here all her life, got married, divorced, gave birth, and worked, yet never had to show proof of residence in the US; has no mexican citizenship, yet gets deported to Mexico; gets detained, without her son being allowed to see her or talk to her over the phone; this is not how the system works and I have personally been through the system myself. I also could not stand that little boy who was just annoyingly selfish and rude to his dad. I had a similar opinion after reading "Table For 5" which took half the book to get us through one day of the story. Never again.

Why do I hate this book?
