About this listen

Orphaned at a young age, Eleanor wants nothing more than to settle in a home of her own. Stratford, having met once with betrayal, desires a woman who will be true. When a complicated inheritance forces them together, they little expect this to be the answer to their innermost desires.

Eleanor Daventry has come into money, but she cannot access her inheritance without a husband. Steadfast and independent, she would rather become a schoolmistress than take a husband she does not love.

Stratford Tunstall has just discovered his predecessor willed the estate’s unentailed land to Miss Daventry. Although cynical regarding love, the man recognizes a practical solution when he sees one. He and Miss Daventry must marry, and Stratford wastes no time in pressing his suit - with disastrous results.

In the face of such an insulting proposal, Eleanor flees to London where she lands unwittingly in the home of Stratford’s closest friends. Now thrown together constantly, Eleanor can't help admiring his masterful apologies, never mind how often he must deliver them. Stratford concedes that, against all his predictions, Eleanor has no shortage of determined suitors.

When combined forces threaten Eleanor’s reputation, Stratford realizes it's more than her land he cares about. Somehow, he'll have to convince Eleanor that his coming to her rescue is a deed inspired by love.

Story good- however, the reader mispronounced many words. Annoying to say the least. I hope not to come across her again

I liked that it was long cause if you get to short of a book it seems rushed. there was time for development. I like a good clean but still romantic book

good listen

I enjoyed the story and characters, but was confused because chapter 5 was obviously from a different book. Also I heard noises as if someone moved during the recording. So although story and characters were enjoyable. The quality of recording made it hardpress to continue, and I would have stopped if I hadn’t paid for it

Liked the book but chapter 5 was for another book

I don’t often write reviews, but I am making a point to recommend this book. Not only this book, but this author. She always delivers. This story had multiple levels with side plots that drew me in. I usually don’t suffer angst in stories that I know will likely conclude with a happy ending, but this story kept me constantly fretting over the main characters. The only disappointment I felt was that there wasn’t an epilogue. I wanted a glimpse into the happily ever after for all the characters. If you enjoy this genre, you will love this book.

An rollercoaster ride

It's a decent story, well narrated. There were a lot of characters to keep up with, as several new ones get introduced once the parties get to London. I'm glad an earlier reviewer mentioned that chapter five does not belong, or I would have been lost, thinking it was a whole new set of characters and side story being introduced. So, skip to the next chapter to carry on with the real story.

Not bad

I enjoyed the story and characters, though it was a trifle formulaic. However, if this is your genre, this is par for the course. The reader has a pleasant voice and accent, but tends to mispronounce many words - someone should be checking this. A few Americanisms inevitably creep in when this is the author’s origin eg ‘fit’ used in the past tense instead of ‘fitted’ and other such.

Sweet regency romance

Great story. I loved how upbeat and kind Eleanor was even when people treated her badly. The characters were wonderful even the bad guys were fun to get to know.
I enjoyed the mystery that was peppered throughout the book- it kept me guessing as to who the bad guy was. I was worried that Eleanor may not end up with a happy ever after, but I was definitely happy in the end.

The audio version of this book was very well done. The narrator was fantastic she had a great English accent and she was wonderful with her French accent too.

Loved the story, loved the narrator

I really enjoyed this story and all the supporting characters. The one thing I didn't like was the way drunken proposal was recapped instead of fully played out. That really would have been fun to read! Overall it was a great story.

I enjoy Goutet’s writing. The plots gallop along and the characters are well drawn. What I really disliked was the person who narrated. Fake English accent full of mispronunciations. Ugh.
