A Newbery Honor book.
Greta had always loved the fog - the soft gray mist that rolled in from the sea and drifted over the village. The fog seemed to have a secret to tell her. Then one day when Greta was walking in the woods and the mist was closing in, she saw the dark outline of a stone house against the spruce trees - a house where only an old cellar hole should have been.
Then she saw a surrey come by, carrying a lady dressed in plum-colored silk. The woman beckoned for Greta to join her, and soon, Greta found herself launched on an adventure that would take her back to a past that existed only through the magic of the fog.

It was like a step back in time :-). This is a book for preteens based in Nova Scotia, I think, and I owned it as a child and read it lovingly; I have always loved the fog!
Between the e-book and the audio, I KNOW that I spent far more for the memory than the original cost me almost 50 years ago, but I still love the book, and I'm happy to actually own the audio copy for future visits if necessary. It was a Newberry award winner "back in the day", and it's fabulous for preteens and even high school kids. Every now and then, I do feel the need to go back and revisit 1 of my old favorites; it's nice to see that I can realize why I loved them to start with!
Wonderful imaginative book for preens
