Ingenue in multiracial hell

This story about an undaunted young woman determined to remodel an abandoned house in a very tough neighborhood carries a punch. She purposely befriends the little boys who come around to visit because they are her best protection. She never sees their many skin colors. They admire her honesty and sincerity but her white skin to them is very visible. It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. Nobody could have made up this story. It feels like the author experienced it herself and just changed the names.
