About this listen

The aunties are back, fiercer than ever and ready to handle any catastrophe - even the mafia - in this delightful and hilarious sequel by Jesse Q. Sutanto, author of Dial A for Aunties.

Meddy Chan has been to countless weddings, but she never imagined how her own would turn out. Now the day has arrived, and she can't wait to marry her college sweetheart, Nathan. Instead of having Ma and the aunts cater to her wedding, Meddy wants them to enjoy the day as guests. As a compromise, they find the perfect wedding vendors: a Chinese Indonesian family-run company just like theirs. Meddy is hesitant at first, but she hits it off right away with the wedding photographer, Staphanie, who reminds Meddy of herself, down to the unfortunately misspelled name.

Meddy realizes that is where their similarities end, however, when she overhears Staphanie talking about taking out a target. Horrified, Meddy can't believe Staphanie and her family aren’t just like her own, they are The Family - actual mafia, and they're using Meddy's wedding as a chance to conduct shady business. Her aunties and mother won’t let Meddy’s wedding ceremony become a murder scene - over their dead bodies - and will do whatever it takes to save her special day, even if it means taking on the mafia.

Critic reviews

"Meddy Chan and her indomitable aunties are back in the hilarious Four Aunties and a Wedding by Jesse Q. Sutanto."—PopSugar

“Sutanto deftly blends preposterous humor (British slang, mafia posers) with enduring devotion to prove ‘there is no right or wrongway to ‘being Asian.’”—Booklist

“Charming, chaotic, and sometimes ridiculous, this tale will appeal to anyone who both adores and is embarrassed by their family, which is just about everyone.”—Publishers Weekly

Not As Good As First

I liked this second book in the sequel, however, it did not keep me laughing like the first one. I’m glad I did the audiobook again. I highly recommend the audiobooks.

Wow!

Such a great book with lots of suspense. I was freaking out for the man character half the time thinking everything would end in disaster at every turn. Also, I like how the author highlights issues most people face, family embarrassment. Though we love our families, they can drive us a tad bit nutty but no matter what we go through, they are always there.

Hoping for another Auntie novel

For some reason, I couldn't get into the beginning of this book in the series, but so glad I kept going.
I truly laughed out loud quite a few times and I just love the antics of the Aunties.
I will listen again because I may have been distracted at the start.
This is a fun listen.

The Best Sequel!

I love this book! I'm so sad that it's over. I am going to miss Meddy and her loveable Aunties so much! The performance was amazing! The story was so well written. It was just an overall great read all around.

Just as fun as the first

It hit the hilarious, chaotic notes that the first story also held. It gave me laughs, the Aunties were a delight, and I feel like there wasn't much I would have changed. The only part that did feel off was all the secrets around Nathan and all the disappearances during her own wedding (I think that wouldn't have been pulled off as easily), but it was still a very fun book to follow up on a hilarious prequel.

Interesting sequel

This sequel was a great follow up to Dial A for Aunties (which I liked slightly more). It has a similar vibe with the same endearing characters and crazy plot twists. I would definitely say that you need to read them in order!

Another hit

The Author and narrator make this already fun book exciting. So far I’ve gone through 2 books and I’m ready for more.

Aunties vs. Uncles — this means war!

Honestly, Meddy is just the supporting character. The real MCs are the four aunties, who in this book square off against another Asian family with a matriarch and a bunch of uncles. If you’re not into
Mr Bean style slapstick, then maybe pass on this book. There are some running gags that riff on book 1’s Weekend at Bernie schticks, as well as My Big Fat Greek Wedding vibes.
Basically, this is about family and fun. Don’t take things so seriously.

What I liked better about this book is that, for all the danger/mafia plots, it’s lighter than book 1.
Even as things get absurdly complicated, you know everything will turn out just fine.

What I didn’t like was Meddy keeping secrets from Nathan and failing to trust him with their crisis …
even as she married him. He is clearly devoted to her and it didn’t ring true that she’d lie to him so much. I also thought there was a huge missed opportunity to bring him into the family (monkey) business.
Ah well. Perhaps that will happen in the next book, which I look forward to brightening my day.

Update April 2024: book 3 does indeed bring Nathan in and keeps improving on the lighter tone.
I’m now all-in myself and rooting for a book 4.
