About this listen

Lia Setiawan has never really fit in. And when she wins a full ride to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she's determined to make it work even though she's never felt more out of place.

But on her first day there she witnesses a girl being forcefully carried away by campus security. Her new schoolmates and teachers seem unfazed, but it leaves her unsure of what she's gotten herself into.

And as she uncovers the secrets of Draycott, complete with a corrupt teacher, a golden boy who isn't what he seems, and a blackmailer determined to get her thrown out, she's not sure if she can trust anyone...especially when the threats against her take a deadly turn.

It’s ok

I like this author, but this book didn’t work for me. I didn’t much like the characters, and the story line was farfeched.

High Recommend!

I love this author and I love this book! Even though it may seem like it’s for “younger” readers, ok so I’m in my late 40’s, it keeps you entertained & guessing until the end. Easy to listen to or read.

Spoiler Alert

I really tried to like Leah but from the start she was so self righteous, judgmental, and unbelievably naive. Why she was so damn nosy that felt the need to insert herself where she didn’t belong and to solve other peoples problems was beyond me. I felt the author spent a bit too much time on Leah lamenting over her guilt for killing Mr. Warner, which warranted as it was self defense. Danny should’ve received harsher punishment as well as Mandy. Despite the disappointing ending Leah was still able to come out on top.

Characters and plot

I liked that I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. I didn't like that it took a little too long to get to the end. It could have wrapped up sooner but it was fun.

Annoying and Needlessly Anxiety-Inducing

The plot was fine, if a little predictable. This really could have been a short story, though. 90% of the narration was just the main character being paranoid and naive, whining in 17 different ways about problems she brought on herself. If this hadn't been part of the Plus catalog I would have requested a refund. As it was, I forwarded through half the book and still didn't miss anything.

Eh

I really enjoyed The Ivies, and was looking for more boarding school murder books, and came across this one. I was immediately disinterested in the book, and because I got it for a long drive, at my first rest stop, changed what I was listening to. I eventually finished the book, but the main character was completely unbearable, whiny, and just overall not a great person, and I couldn't find it in myself to root for her. I found the writing really annoying as well, and most character motivations were unconvincing and confusing.
When it came time for the big reveal, I was completely baffled at who did it, and even more so at WHY. The motivations made no sense, and a lot of the minor plot points just aren't plausible and made no sense to me.
Very disappointed with the novel as a whole.
