About this listen

A clandestine race of half-dragon, half-humans known as dragon-shifters lives among us. Bastian, leader of the Nightfury dragon clan, is sworn to protect humankind at all costs. For him, honor and duty always come first. When the clan dictates he take a human mate to sire a son, he falters, aware that for a human to birth a dragon-shifter she must die. Myst, the woman given into his care, is the most extraordinary he’s ever met, and though he can’t bear the thought of harming her, he is bound by duty.

Myst loves her life in the human world, but Bastian has captured her heart in an instant of electric connection. But Bastian and his warriors are in the middle of a deadly battle with the Razorback dragon-shifters, intent on killing every Nightfury clan member - and the humans they protect - the fate of their world and ours hangs in the balance. An extraordinary blend of action, fantasy, and steamy romance, Fury of Fire brings to life a dangerous new world intertwined with the survival of humanity, all while exploring the meaning of honor and the nature of true love.

If you're looking for hot angst-y "romance"

Sigh... several dozen pages of "foreplay" and angst interspersed with some plot (or, more accurately, dozens of pages of him being amazed at how hot she is, and her being so seduced by how hot he is that she ignores all her instincts). Followed by, literally, 3 full chapters of sex action and forestalled sex action between a couple different couples.

It is a JR Ward Black Dagger wannabe story - complete with the "hip" language and the clothing brand name dropping. People don't walk by someone, they "punch past" them. They don't hold the steering wheel, they fist it. They fist everything, actually...

There should be a story in here - it has the makings for a decently interesting world, complete with believable bad guys and motivations. Trouble is that it is ultimately a girl-porn novel (i.e. lust and sex all wrapped in fated love and hand-wringing angst), not a plotted story. Before reading this, I nearly bought the second in the series when it was on sale, and now I am glad I did not. There just isn't enough story here.

The sex is pretty graphic, but graphic in the girl-porn way (i.e. he circled her "bud", and he needed space behind his zipper)... and once they start having it, it goes on and on and on. Maybe it's not as bad as I think it is - I might just have a headache... hahahahahaha

The narration is... enthusiastic... still good, but perhaps he took the author's excitement a little too seriously. There is quite a bit of swearing and, of course, sex.

I LOVE THIS STORY/SERIES

I really enjoyed the book and couldn't wait for the next one to come along. The narrator is excellent as well. You know it's good when you can't stand to turn it off.

Wonderful Story,...I love the dragons

I love the story. And this new author! I see the similarities to J. R. however. I found the story better and look forward to book two. I feel that her book is different and I enjoyed the story. I am excited about this new series and can't wait to listen to her other books. I think the more the story is developed the more of her personal style we will see. But I loved it sooo much! Great series and worth the credit!!!! Just enough sex to keep it interesting but not so much that there was no story as I have seen in other books. Sylvia Day and Sarah McCarty to be exact.

The Narrator was awesome as well!

Books are great audio matches

I have read this book 3 times and I really enjoyed the audio version. If you love dragon shifters and alpha females that learn there are more species out there then you will enjoy this series!

I think it has possibilities

Some things were very unique to this story and done very well, some things were rehashed from other books of this style. It's got some real possibilities but she's got to give her characters more depth for me to care.

The Narrator was all right but not that good with female voices.

All in all I like it enough to listen to the next two.

I'm Torn...

I purchased both this title and the second one as part of a sale. I had read other reviews that indicated that there seemed to be quite a bit of J. R. Ward style writing or "branding" and I love J. R. Ward so I thought, why not?

I find myself completely torn as to how I feel about this book and this author. On the one hand, the story is great and highly entertaining. On the other, I'm surprised the woman hasn't been sued by J. R. Ward. It isn't just a similarity, it's an absolute copying of style, vocabulary and race personality. It was like reading really excellent fan fiction based on the Black Dagger Brotherhood even though the supernatural race is different. Note that I said "really excellent" fan fiction, because it would be but it hardly qualifies as original. Maybe that's what this started out being...I have no clue.

So, I'm torn. I like the storyline but I'm put off by what I feel is theft. I'd love to know J. R. Ward's thoughts on this. If she didn't care, I'd read easier knowing my purchase hasn't contributed to supporting blatant rip off of another's imagination and effort. It's a GREAT storyline that didn't require the dragons speak and think like the Brothers so it's a shame I can't give the story a better rating or review.

Dragons and Magic and Romance, Oh My!

I love this series so far. I was looking for something to fill in between DoW books. This fit well. I love stories with danger, mystery and lots of plot so this one fit in well. So here's the short version, if you like hard edged men with hearts of gold, bad guys that die in a pile of ash and really steamy seduction then you will love this series!
Its different for me to hear the story from a man's voice but that is the POV the story is written in. Most of the ones I've listened to have been narrated by women, especially the ones with steamy scenes like the ones in this book. But when a deep, purring male voice is needed Mr. Darcie does the job nicely. On the plot front there are plenty of characters to work with for lead male in the coming books. Also, the story lends to a fairly long series. I read the second book in the series on my Kindle and its amazing too. I am going to get Fury of Ice on audio too so I re-listen as many times as I want until the third story comes out. LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!

Uneven but ultimately entertaining

I don't know anything about this author, but if this is her first effort, it's pretty good. I was initially put off by the cheesy dialogue between the male characters and almost turned it off. (It sounded too much like what a young women might think grown men talk like.) Once that fell away, it was simply over-heated in the way an inexperienced writer might portray sex. Overall, the book improved over the duration, with some rather good action scenes and an interesting twist or two in the story. I ended up liking it well enough that I purchased the 2nd book (on sale).

I like the reader very much but he kept doing a distracting thing with the word 'and.' See if you don't notice as well. Maybe it's just me.

A FANTASTIC FANTASY SERIES STARTS OFF

I've come into this series a bit late having just found it and, as I love anything 'Shifter' I thought I'd give it a try (despite the mixed reviews) and I was very happy I did.

Firstly, let me start by saying I didn't like the basis of the story:- a Dagon-shifter finding a high energy woman to impregnate and bear him a child then die - not an endearing quality you want from your hero. But thankfully Bastian, the Leader of the Nightfury Clan, realised this was wrong and regretted his actions towards Myst albeit a little too late and happily made amends.... with some surprising consequences.

However, I loved the Dragon-shifter world - a brotherhood made up of lots of handsome, leather clad badass Alpha types wearing shit kickers together with all the snappy quick dialogue and funny banter that went with it and I guess that's where the similarities between Ward's brilliant, awesome and, IMHO cannot be beaten, BDB can be found. But set that series aside as this is a good and worthy listen and there's plenty of action, passion, sex, romance and conflicts between the Nightfury Clan (good Dragons) and the hated Razorback Clan (evil Dragons with a hate and kill all the Humans, agenda).

The product placement peed me off a bit as did the WTF question when the heroine just drove off from the Lair which was supposed to be in a cliff and magically protected with an impenetrable force field around it? However, I overlooked these flaws because of the enjoyment factor I got from the rest of the action-packed story.

Worth a credit? I would have been happy if I'd spent a credit on this but at under $10 for a 12 hour listen I saved my credit for a more costly listen and so I just bought it - and don't regret it.
