Publisher's summary

Tuscany, 1358: Thomas Blackstone has built a formidable reputation in exile, fighting as a mercenary amid the ceaseless internecine warring of Italy's city states. But success has bred many enemies, and when a dying man delivers a message recalling him to England, it seems almost certain to be a trap. Yet Blackstone cannot disobey - the summons is at the queen's demand.

On his journey, Blackstone will brave the terrors of the High Alps in winter, face the Black Prince in tournament, confront the bloody anarchy of a popular revolt, and submit to trial by combat. Every step of the way, he will be shadowed by a notorious assassin with orders to dispatch him to hell.

My new best books.

Gilman's is a great writer. And as I am visually challenged, the narration puts a wonderful story to life for me.

Heart-wrenching medieval adventure

Every chapter held my attention as strongly this time as the first time I read this series. The pacing and the tone are just right and there’s no unnecessary dialogue or rumination. All of the main characters are fully developed and, unlike some other books in this genre, the women are portrayed as strong and resourceful too. I’m looking forward very much to the next volume.

Incredibly Entertaining

This series keeps getting better. I cannot count the times I backed up and listened again, because I didn’t want to miss something. Excellent story telling. It doesn’t get any better… or does it? I’ve already purchased the next book. When will the remaining books be on audible?
