About this listen

The complete Northern Wolf series, over forty hours of award-winning military historical fiction, is now available in one box set. A broken man will be forged in the flames of war.

Johannes Wolf. Immigrant. Soldier. Unlikely hero. Wolf’s company is made up of men willing to do the dirty work needed to win the war that divided America. Ride through the American Civil War with Wolf’s motley crew of daring Union raiders and enjoy fast-paced, non-stop war fiction at the pointy end of a saber!

Northern WolfA maimed young man with no prospects swindles his way into the Army of the Potomac. Along with a host of green recruits, he is placed into the Michigan Cavalry Brigade. Riding for Gettysburg, they find themselves holding the rear of the Union line and end up face-to-face with J. E. B. Stuart and his Invincibles.

Northern HuntJohannes Wolf has made a crucial mistake. He’s volunteered for a secret raid and drags his platoon of misfits along with him. They fall under the command of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren and set out on a quest for redemption and vengeance that will strike at the head of the Southern Cause.

Northern BloodIn the spring of 1864, a daring raid is devised to draw the Confederate cavalry into a winner-take-all showdown. The Union needs a group of soldiers just brazen enough to do it—or die trying. Libby Prison’s most recent escapee, Johannes Wolf, and his unit of misfits might just be the ones to get the job done—if the Red Shirts don’t kill them first at a dilapidated inn known only as the Yellow Tavern.

Northern DawnA promoted Wolf finds himself in the hot seat of the largest all-cavalry battle of the war near Trevilian Station. Isolated and surrounded, can they survive the coming Southern storm? Or will they be overrun and annihilated, a mere footnote in history?

Northern ShadowsWith the surrender of Robert E. Lee, Wolf’s war isn’t over. Diehard rebels still operate in the field, led by the secret organization the Knights of the Golden Circle. Their plot? Kill the president and let the war rage on. Wolf and his men rush to Washington, DC, to meet the enemy head-on. But these foes do not march and fight as armies do; they lurk in the shadows, waiting to strike.

Both the author and narrator are outstanding!

The Northern Wolf series, books 1-5: I love historical fiction, and this series is excellent. I especially liked when the author speaks of his fact finding and references at the end of some of his books. I didn't want the books end, The characters live in you and you just want more. Thank you Mr. Greene for this incredible series, well done!

not my usual read

I have never read a fictional story of this era. It was very enjoyable, I was one with characters, and I felt the emotions. A well narrated story with voice and inflection that was easy to follow.

Informative and engaging

The various storylines allowed you to see the civil war from various vantage points and so become familiar with both armies. The narrator was terrific, creating each individual. Starting each chapter with place and date enabled you to track the action. Grew to love or hate individuals so well portrayed was each. Learning about the strategy and communication occurred was interesting. The carrying on of the battle after the supposed conclusion of the war was news to me. Such horrendous acts we commit against our fellow man.

Terrific Series

This series does a great job really personalizing what the Civil War was like from both sides of the conflict. Once I started I could not stop reading. Can’t wait for the next series that Daniel decides to write.

Historical fiction

His twist on history is clever. I’d strongly recommend it. Also I really like his departure from others interpretations of what “actually” happened.

Not many as good as this one.

Honestly, this should be on everyone's list who like historical fiction. I have relistined to this a few times now and it doesn't get old.

The writer spins a tale that is truly great and deep in its scope. Rearly do I connect to characters on a level as I do with these. They are as real as people you meet in your life. Each and everyone is crafted with vertues and faults. Even the "villains" are redeemable in their own way, despite the senselessness of their cause. Even Payne and later Booth, who are the least redeemable of all the characters, you can't help but to grudgingly respect their conviction to thier belief in the southern cause. Payne, who on the surface seemes to be a psycho, you start to wonder if his exposure to the horrors of war along with mental instability, a fanatical belief in his cause, and his willingness to do what he must to safegaurd his home and culture made him into the villain he was.

Out protagonist, Wolfe is deeply flawed . He's got a chip on his shoulder due to bad luck before the start of the telling. You see him grow from an immature hellion who thinks he must prove his worth, to a scared recruit then into a hardened warrior who flirts with his inner darkness of cruelty then to mature noble warrior who must wrestle with his own desires of vengeance against the lives and well-being of his fellow brothers in arms and of course the needs of his mission.

Also the bonding between Wolfe and Willhelm is the most beautifuly done and most accurate I've ever read or heard. Author takes time to craft and build their bond and by the end, it is the element that has the deepest impact on the telling. Few authors can capture the bond that soldiers build in the heat of battle quite like Daniel Greene. Also, he doesn't do this just once, but many times with different members of the 13th. Each one of the archs are taylored to fit each unique personality of the supporting character.

Another aspect I want to praise Daniel Greene on is his historical research. Yes, there are parts that have been fictionalized, but there are nuggets in there that open one up to hidden history that most people don't know about. One such nugget was Libby prison and Elizabeth Van Lew and her spy ring. There is a character in Libby that I thought was fictional, but turned out to be pretty closely potrayed in the story accurately. Mr Greene launched my own research into Libby Prison and Ma. Van Lew's Spy Ring.

The last thing I want to review is Bradford Hastings outstanding narration. He did an outstanding job and I consider him probably one of the best in the business. His voice for the characters are distinct and you don't get lost on who is in dialogue. He does a good job on accents and puts a hundred percent in delivering the story in an entertaining way. He is the life and breath of the story.

All I Have to say is Bravo gentleman. you should be proud!!!
