About this listen

The much-anticipated third installment in Card's New York Times best-selling Mithermages series

Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die. And if the families didn't kill them, the Gate Thief would—that mysterious mage who destroyed every Great Gate, along with the Gate Mage who created it, before it could be opened between Earth and Westil.

But Danny survived. And Danny battled the Gate Thief—and won.

What he didn't know at the time was that the Gate Thief had a very good reason for closing the Great Gates—and Danny has now fallen into the power of that great enemy of both Earth and Westil.

This was on a different flow than the previous two books. Very slow. It almost feels as if plot movements for two or three books were fit into one. So they got rid of all the action. but I made myself finish it.

A weak finish

If readers were the starving gluttons in hell, this is the feast that quelled indulgence.

Wow, in awe and contentment forever until the end.

the ending felt somewhat abrupt but listening to the authors afterward I felt somewhat better about this as I feel we may see these characters again in a later book

great book

The narrators were exceptional. Unfortunately, the first two books were much, much better. I felt that this book was entirely too cheesy and sentimental. So much so that it almost felt like a children's book. I want to stress, however that I am a fan of Orson Scott Card and the first two books were some his best work, in my opinion.

Anticlimactic

To end this series like this just baffles me there is so much more to be told or places to take it. I have to admit it was quite imaginative how everything was tied together in a pretty bow to end the series but it just felt like an out for Orson to end the series.

Disappointing to see the series end this way.

i loved the 1st book but starting in the 2nd book and more so in this one the dialog, mostly between Danny and his entourage, dragged on and did not feel natural. The story, overall, is very interesting.

Blah blah blah

highly creative, and just a very good book. I enjoyed the whole series. the first 2 books were clearly set up to lead to this one. the last was on a whole nother level.

really really interesting magic system

Great concussion to an amazing adventure of Danny North. Emily and Stefan voice the characters with great charisma. Glad all 3 books kept them. Looking forward to see what Scott Card comes up with next.

Was worth the wait

After reading the first two installments of the series, I was really looking forward to the Gatefather. Unfortunately, the story was very dry in comparison with the first two.

A bit of a let down.

Orson builds such a rich world in the first two books that you are ready for this biblical in scope climax that never comes.

Shame runs out of gas at the finish line
