Publisher's summary
Generations Deep is a groundbreaking audiobook that is memoir meets trauma workbook, complete with questionnaires and inventories developed by mental health professionals to help you on your journey. In this sometimes heartbreaking but always hopeful, practical guide, Licensed Professional Counselor Gina Birkemeier uses her own personal story to illustrate how unaddressed dysfunction and trauma can create emotional wounds and toxic beliefs that are passed down from one generation to the next. Through it we learn that what isn’t repaired gets repeated.
Using memoir, self-help components, questionnaires, and inventories (all available with this audio version of the book) along with scientific research and elements of scripture and faith, Generations Deep helps listeners learn how they can break destructive cycles and rewrite their stories to pass on a legacy of transformation.
Through her raw story, and the story of her ancestors, Birkemeier shares how our beliefs and behaviors are influenced by the emotional health of those who cared for us.
It is a story of bondage to freedom and shame to self-compassion. Generations Deep offers its listeners a way to find that path for themselves.
While Generations Deep is immensely practical, it will also have you in tears, in shock, and ultimately inspired to live your very best life. Listen to this audiobook at your own risk though, because how you see yourself and your family will never be the same.
This audio version includes bonus interviews with a trauma coach, a neuro-rehabilitation psychologist, an executive pastor, an epigenetic scientist and researcher, a clinical social worker, and a best-selling author - each sharing their personal and professional experiences on generational patterns.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Ff we spend our lives trying to be “the strong one,” we become exhausted, burned-out, and disconnected from our truest selves. What if it were different? Could there be a different way to be strong? Could strength mean more than pushing on and pushing through pain, bearing every heavy burden on our own? What if, instead, true strength were more like the tide: soft and bold, fierce and gentle, moving together as one powerful force? In Strong like Water, author and trauma therapist Aundi Kolber offers a framework for true flourishing.

Story
Don't waste your pain. None of us escapes the heartache and disappointments of life. To live is to hurt, and we all have the wounds to prove it. Regardless of how we've been hurt, we all face a common question: What should we do with our pain? Should we stoically ignore it? Should we just "get over it"? Should we optimistically hope that everything will work out in the end? If we fail to respond appropriately to the wounds that life and relationships inflict, our pain will be wasted; it will numb us or destroy us.

We're all infected with a spiritual disease. Its name is shame. Whether we realize it or not, shame affects every aspect of our personal lives and vocational endeavors. It seeks to destroy our identity in Christ, replacing it with a damaged version of ourselves that results in unhealed pain and brokenness. But God is telling a different story for your life. Psychiatrist Curt Thompson unpacks the soul of shame, revealing its ubiquitous nature and neurobiological roots. He also provides the theological and practical tools necessary to dismantle shame.

Story
Most institutions unknowingly train employees, or teach students using an outdated approach that relies on a punishment-reward system that doesn’t work. (Hint: You’re probably using it right now). This faulty approach squanders of potential, creates negative feedback loops, and leaves many with the false assumption that they aren’t “smart”. The good news? We don’t have to make that mistake anymore. Scientists have found that people are chemically and structurally hardwired to enjoy learning. It’s in our DNA.

Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Not only did they take on remote school supervision, but after the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing Black Lives Matter protests, many also grappled with the responsibility to teach their kids about social justice — with few resources to guide them.

Not your typical therapy book..
Gina wrote this book like you're her truest friend. I was routing for her from the start. You'll be walking through the pain, her hard lessons and a bunch of laughs. I often found myself with tears streaming, cheering on her on, sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for results.
There were so many interesting connections made as to how we are raised and the impact of generations before us. I am grateful to Gina for writing such a heartfelt book that seems more than just a book. I'll be going back for a second read with intentions of really going through the prompts. God Bless you for being brave enough to share this and to help others heal. Highly Recommend!!

Outstanding
Words cannot express the thankfulness in my heart for Ms. Gina’s hard work and obedience to present this book to the world. It’s impossible to summarize the personal impact because it’s ongoing; my journey in healing is a constantly moving forward. The reflection, engaging and writing is so important - the first attempt started with reluctant journaling mechanics, but the end result was fresh insight and new awareness the Lord entrusted to me about my own brokenness. Truth I need to hear and was ready to address.
One must not see this book as a halfhearted read for when you happen to have downtime… this is a powerful tool to set in motion for spiritual transformation, the Lord is the carpenter and the restorative work being done is by his sovereign hand. The incredible life story Ms. Gina vulnerably shares is an instrument He works through so that you can be seen, known and loved.
I’m so thankful for the wonder and complexity of science and the divine, to me they so beautifully woven together by
our Creator. So to see the two camps coming together to acknowledge the design is no accident is confirming and wonderful.

Amazing book. Highly recommend.
This book was so healing for me, and gave me the language I needed to process my trauma. Gina is a gifted writer and speaker and you feel like she is right next to you through the whole journey. It was fascinating and helpful to understand the epigenetic roots.

Amazing and powerful book, definitely order!
This book is amazing and brought me many healing breakthroughs. Gina shares her story with such brave vulnerability that will spark so much for you whether you relate to the specifics of her story or not. It is an incredible look at how shame, secrecy and family dysfunction brew, affect us and pass down. With all of the reflection questions she offers and her workbook, it really gives you the opportunity for healing while reading. You don’t just read the book, you heal too and I believe the healing is made possible through this book is because of the vulnerability and rawness she tells her own story with. Even though it’s a book (I used the audiobook), she makes you feel so safe through her words, empathy, knowledge and wisdom. I have been interested in transgenerational trauma for a while and have read other books about it but I especially love Generations Deep. I felt so seen in my own story and felt God’s healing presence while reading and working through it too. Her narration is also excellent! I definitely recommend this book if you are working on healing, or helping others to heal!
