About this listen
There's a cost to being a certain kind of strong.
When it comes to difficult circumstances, we’ve all heard the platitudes: “No pain, no gain.” “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” But if we spend our lives trying to be “the strong one,” we become exhausted, burned-out, and disconnected from our truest selves.
What if it were different? Could there be a different way to be strong? Could strength mean more than pushing on and pushing through pain, bearing every heavy burden on our own? What if, instead, true strength were more like the tide: soft and bold, fierce and gentle, moving together as one powerful force?
In Strong like Water, author and trauma therapist Aundi Kolber offers a framework for true flourishing. With each page, you’ll:
- Learn how your nervous system shapes your experience so that we can move through pain instead of being stuck in it.
- Explore various practices, rhythms, and resources to support you in challenging circumstances with compassion and hope.
- Discover how to internalize connection, love, and safety―empowering you with greater resilience.
A different, more expansive way of healing, wholeness, and possibly―especially―strength is possible. We were made to be strong like water.

Women were there. For centuries, discussions of early Christianity have focused on male leaders in the church. But there is ample evidence right in the New Testament that women were actively involved in ministry, at the frontier of the gospel mission, and as respected leaders. Nijay Gupta calls us to bring these women out of the shadows by shining light on their many inspiring contributions to the planting, growth, and health of the first Christian churches.

The result is a clearer path forward for evangelicals amid their current identity crisis—and insight for others who want a deeper understanding of what the term "evangelical" means today.

Story
In Try Softer, you'll learn how to: know and set emotional and relational boundaries; make sense of the difficult experiences you've had; identify your attachment style-and how that affects your relationships today; move through emotions rather than get stuck by them; and grow in self-compassion and talk back to your inner critic. Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won't be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

Story
When we feel alone, cut off, or trapped, we can let those difficulties steer us onto a path toward an authentic, flourishing life—living in a way that allows us to find the wholeness that lies within. Even when we’re alone, a sense of community can accompany us through the stormy times. Our words, hearts, and actions can line up with a larger vision, rather than the smaller views our anxious, fearful thoughts arouse in us. To live in a less constricted way—Salzberg says we need to get real about what’s most important.

Terminal lucidity is a relatively common but poorly understood phenomenon. Near the end of life, many people—including those who have suffered brain injuries or strokes, or have been silenced by mental illness or deep dementia—experience what seems a miraculous return. They regain their clarity and energy, are able to talk with families and caregivers, recall their lives and often appear to be aware of their nearing death.

In The Influential Mind, neuroscientist Tali Sharot takes us on a thrilling exploration of the nature of influence. We all have a duty to affect others - from the classroom to the boardroom to social media. But how skilled are we at this role, and can we become better? It turns out that many of our instincts - from relying on facts and figures to shape opinions, to insisting others are wrong or attempting to exert control - are ineffective because they are incompatible with how people's minds operate.

As much as we all might wish that mental health problems, with their elusive causes and unsettling behaviors, simply did not exist, millions of people suffer from them, sometimes to an extreme extent. Many others face addiction to alcohol and other drugs, as overdose and suicide deaths abound. Yet the vast majority of doctors receive minimal instruction in treating these conditions during their lengthy medical training.

This is an unusual–and unusually interesting–exploration of diet, weight and health that has a memoir aspect and a practical aspect. It’s a cut-to-the-chase audiobook that makes you realize not that everything you know about dieting and weight loss isn’t true (even though it probably isn’t), but that way too much of your brain, your time and your pocketbook has been taken up with the endless (and futile) quest.

Bring tissue…
I was crying within the first 10 minutes and not sure I stopped.
Such a deep, yet assessable, look at what it means to “work through” the trauma you and I have experience. Littered with helpful tips and resources while giving psychological insight and Scriptural support. I loved the author’s first work “Try Softer” but this might be better… it was definitely what I needed.

From a trauma therapist...
I love this book and cannot recommend it enough. It takes all of my clinical and theoretical leanings and blends them together beautifully with a sincere, lived-out faith. If you can't go to therapy, but need it, start here. I just finished Kolber's follow-up book, Strong Like Water, and think it is a phenomenal follow-up to this one, providing many uncomplicated practices to help calm your nervous system.

Validated, knowing restoration will come.
After passing through 5 years of trauma as an adult of spousal abandonment, facing the music, defamation, vocational treachery, single fatherhood, financial entanglement….
I floundered and wandered and toiled through adversity from every angle I could imagine with a Pandora’s box I never thought would be unleashed. Kept my eyes on Jesus and trusted him every time to hold me and carry me. Your two books have been the most life-changing and validating books I’ve ever read. I’ve pushed through the adversity with all that you’ve shared, navigating in a dark sea without stars, leaning on Jesus and trusting how he was developing my heart, character and body. Climbing mountains, martial arts, going on wanders, meeting friends in their trauma and hardships while being present and patient with myself.
Guided by Try Softer
Validated by Strong Like Water
Now I only wait for the day I can pull the mountain out of the ground as Jesus restores a bountiful life from the ashes that I’ve come from.
Thank you Aundi🫡

Narration was distracting
I tried to listen to this book several times and couldn’t figure out what it was that wasn’t landing for me. I finally figured out it was the tone and rhythm of the narrator who used the same rhythm pattern every several syllables, and repeated it over, and over. I know this is really subjective, but it was distracting for me.
