Publisher's summary

Fall in love with a mysterious and tortured hero in this #1 New York Times bestselling author's steamy, suspenseful romance about an "irresistible" (Booklist) British alpha and the one woman who may be able to save him—as long as he can protect her from his dark past.

Named to RetailMeNot's "List of the 23 Must-Read Books of 2019"! Named one of the "Most Popular Books Published in February 2019" by Goodreads!

Izzy White knows of the darkness in this world. After all, she escaped it long ago. Determined not to let her past beat her, Izzy has a secure, stable life with a job she loves in nursing. But one act of kindness will completely upend everything she's so carefully built—putting her right back in the crosshairs of danger she's been so desperate to avoid.

When Theo Kane shows up like a knight in shining armor, Izzy can't help thinking she's been saved from one threat and exposed to another. His imposing physique, the harsh lines of his face, and the wariness of everyone who comes close are just a few clues to Theo Kane's notorious reputation. The man is positively terrifying. But with Izzy, he's tender and a complete gentleman, and her fascination with the mysterious beast of a man becomes too powerful for her to walk away.

As Theo's demons come to light, running becomes even more impossible. And yet staying together could doom them both.

A very good standalone JEP

I really like JEP. Her trilogies are always yummy and complex. This stand alone was very enjoyable. Izzy and Theo are both living with some past trauma. They fit together like two puzzle pieces, each filling the empty spaces in the other. Their chemistry is hot, and their love is heartfelt. There are some great bumps along the way to redemption and HEA, which captured my attention and kept my interest all the way to the end.

I love that JEP writes intelligent, strong characters who are also flawed. She puts them in situations and settings that are out of the ordinary, which always makes for absorbing and entertaining reading. But it’s always so believable, because her characters are always so human. The secondary characters are always fully developed, as well, which adds depth to the story. My only complaint in this one, is that I would have liked to see more maturity between Izzy and her best friend, Jess. They are both intelligent, sensible, affectionate professional women, until they start talking about men, and revert to junior high level tittering and giggling.

There is none of the shallow repetition in the form of endless internal monologues and inane musings which I find in so many contemporary romance writers. JEP has too much to say in her very interesting plots, so that kind of unnecessary filler never shows up in her writing. I really appreciate that about her.

This book delivers on all of JEP’s skills and talent. I highly recommend it.

The narration was brilliant. I’d never heard Julie Garthan before, but I’d listen to any audiobook she performs.

A caution to anyone who strongly dislikes single narration. Jack George narrates a very small portion of this audiobook at the very end. Almost like an after thought. The way it’s presented as dual narration is misleading. It would have been more accurate to say: narrated by Julie Garthan with a special guest appearance by Jack George.

Perfect.

I read the book and fell in love with the characters and the story. I wanted to listen to the audiobook, I wasn’t disappointed, the British accents(fans face). Theo Cane is one of my favorite book boyfriends. I love a hero that’s strong but has some flaws, it makes him more real to me. Izzy is strong and brave, I admire her courage and her ability to help people. I love everything this author writes.

Terrible male voiceover

I have read this book and i really like it, so I thought I would enjoy the audiobook. The voice she makes for the male role sounds so cringy it’s terrible. I continued to listen and I had to stop when I got to the first adult/sexy scene. I wish they would get a male to voice the male lines even though I know it’s from her perspective.

B-, but entertaining.

Entertaining, but not as meaty as the author’s previous books. I will continue to read her books.

Loved ♥️

I wish Jack George had more narration… female narrator was not good at a male voice. Beautiful story though! Love JEM

Theo & Izzy

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

Audible review. Izzy's POV until the epilogue. Standalone. Narrators: Julie Garthan narrates the entire book until the epilogue that is read by Jack George; both did a great job although Julie read Theo as Leo twice. There are quite a few parallels to the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy which is honestly getting old and lost 1 star because of it. Trigger Warnings: beaten/abused prostitute; bondage, spanking; fights; 2 murders; 2 rapes.

Theo Kane is a 31 year old, cobalt blue eyed, tattoed (rosary beads, praying hands, huge cross tattoo that reminded him that he's broken God's rules but God forgives everyone even if they haven't abided by His rules, & a new tattoo that reads "my love for her holds me prisoner, her faith leaves me in awe, her hope encourages mine, & her touch reaches my soul, she is my peace my cure my love"), owner of The Playground (a fight/strip club) & is an informant/vigilante. He killed his abusive father reacting to his unexpected touch and no longer allows anyone to touch him. Izzy White is a 27 year old green eyed nurse, hiding from the man who scarred her stomach & raped her. She's living under an alias that is never revealed. Izzy was 2 years old when her dad died & 17 years old when her mom died after suffering with cancer. She became a stripper to support herself until she had enough money to go to nursing school. One night on the way home from the hospital where she's a nurse she hears a woman crying and stops to help. Theo ends up rescuing her & Penny, his half sister. Things escalate quickly between the two and by the epilogue they are parents of a daughter named Lola, building a new house, she's attending medical school to become a doctor, Theo murdered her rapist, and Theo no longer has an issue with being touched. It never discloses if they are married.

Side characters: Penelope (aka Penny; Theo's half sister; product of his dad's affair; abandoned by her mom when her dad died); Callum (Theo's friend/bodyguard/driver; interested in Jess but nothing ever happens between the two); Jefferson (Theo's butler); Jess (midwife; Izzy's best friend & roommate); Judy (Theo's mom/business partner); Andy (Theo's stepdad; police officer; helps keep Theo out of jail); Stan (Theo's tattoo artist); Bernard (Theo's dad; deceased); Tristan (the man that raped & scarred Izzy; deceased) JP
