Editorial reviews

Even after his death, comedian George Carlin remains one of the most well-loved and respected comedians of all time. While preparing for his 12th HBO special, he spoke with stand-up comic and Daytime Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of The Rosie O'Donnell Show Judy Gold about his life and career. Carlin displays his usual irreverent and sharp intelligence as he talks about hypocrisy and the power people inadvertently assign to words, explaining his famous "Seven Dirty Words" routine in detail. Carlin also reminisces about the start of his career and how his trouble with the IRS forced him to work harder on his shows and improve his writing.

Carlin Overcomes...

Terrific stuff from the much-missed Carlin. Erudite, funny and to the point. Don't miss this, despite the inadequacies of the interviewer.

How do people pick these things? A comic interviewing another (much more accomplished) comic just does't work. Rote questions, no follow-ups to provocative answers, over-laughing...what I wouldn't give to have somebody like Brian Lamb from C-SPAN's excellent Q&A program have taken a crack at the great George.

Absolute master of comedy and irony

If your catholic, you should read him
If your a lawyer, you should study him
If your irreverent, you should listen and try to understand what it really means to be.

Couldn't finish it

Any additional comments?

For some reason I was expecting humor not autobiography. Maybe it was my mood but I simply couldn't finish this. Too boring.

A nice interview with George Carlin

What did you like best about George Carlin with Judy Gold at the 92nd Street Y? What did you like least?

I enjoyed listening to George Carlin answer question about his stand up and ablums humor, his tours etc, It was a good history on Carlin told by Carlin.
I felt like Gold controled too much of the interview no letting Carlin give really long answers to stories in his life.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Too short, I really wanted more, wanted more of his comedy. Or at least more of his history, I felt I got very little of any of those thing.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Judy Gold?

NO

Was George Carlin with Judy Gold at the 92nd Street Y worth the listening time?

Yes and NO, I enjoyed listening George Carlin answer the question, but it was a little to little and I was left wanting more.

Any additional comments?

It didn't really satify all my question about George Carlin, I have heard better interviews of him before which have made me jaded.

George Was Amazing

Would you listen to George Carlin with Judy Gold at the 92nd Street Y again? Why?

If I could edit out Judy Gold and just listen to George Carlin, I would listen to this again.Ms. Gold's interview style was overbearing and interrupting. I was fascinated with his early education in a Catholic parochial school. Who knew there were schools ahead of their time in the 40's?

Who was your favorite character and why?

George Carlin

What does Judy Gold bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Judy brought nothing to the experience. Although she did have a few good questions.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's not easy being a comedian.
