Publisher's summary

The most intriguing "what if" of the American Civil War presents an exciting and graphic recreation of alternate possibilities.

Everyone with an interest in America's greatest battle comes up against its controversies. What if J. E. B. Stuart had arrived on the battlefield before the second day? What if Ewell had pressed hard on the heels of the Union rout on the first day? What if Pickett's charge had been stronger and better led? What if the Army of the Potomac had been commanded by a more aggressive counter attacker than Meade?

Gettysburg presents some of these possibilities as though they were the reality, and explores the impact they would have on the battle and on the course of the war. The alternate events are anchored firmly in the context of the actual events, and are all within the scope of what was genuinely possible.

Fantastic listen, couldn’t turn it off

Well researched, expertly detailed and a blow by blow “what if” in massive style! Whether a Yankee or a Reb, in this alternate version, we all win! Huzzah!!

Alternative Gettysburg

Well done , with the basics of the actual battle frequently apparent. I do think the author overstated Meade’s degree of competency and slightly Lee’s errors as well. But overall very plausible.

Hard to follow as an audio book

Unless you have an intimate comprehension of the individual historical figures and geography you may find this retelling confusing at times.

The writing and performance is very good. The descriptions of battle, tactics and weaponry excellent.

If you’re thinking the alternative history will be dramatically different you will be disappointed.

Very interesting take on the what could have happened line. Loved the post script. Great job!

Wonderful But Confusing

A wonderfully told and thought out what if alternative Gettysburg story.

At times my loose knowledge of the battle left me confused. This unit and that unit crash into each other while this unit moved toward another unit.

I knew the major players but got lost as rank moved down. Still a great listen and the post script explained the outcomes very nicely.

Detailed. Interesting perspective.

I would have preferred the author share the ‘what if’s’ he planned to explore at the beginning. For me, it would have made the book more enjoyable, mostly because my preferred ‘what if’ would be Stonewall Jackson’s soldiers were worse shots in May 1863.

One of the most frustrating books I’ve listened too

The author spent most of his time with very detailed information about the battle but unfortunately didn’t keep us novices in the loop. Half the time he would state some unit under some captain and expect anybody to understand what side he was talking about or possibly even where The farm he is referencing even is. I even thought about getting Maps trying to figure out who and where he was talking about. very frustrating should have an editor go through and require explanations

Difficult to listen to.

The narrator sounds like a robot. It's just a flat tone throughout the book. I only finished the book because I used it as background noise while at work. I don't recommend this audiobook.

too many details for audio

this would be great if you could remember all the names and military structures. in addition, not being able to access detailed maps means you can't visualize the movements and results. that makes it difficult to compare real history vs proposed operations.
