About this listen

She only wanted to be a mother to her own children - FLDS Cult leader had other plans.

Sarah was born in 1979 in the FLDS compound. At 18, Sarah entered into an arranged marriage to Richard S Allred who was the grandson and personal bodyguard to leader Rulon Jeffs, and later Warren Jeffs. Sarah was the first of five wives and was often used to set the example. Sarah's husband was given Warren's prized daughter as his third wife who became Warren's source to control Sarah's family.

As the Leadership adjusted, her world turned upside down. Rich was taken to a secret project to begin "Zion", and only those who are worthy could go. Rich came for her children, but Sarah was not worthy. She wasn't allowed to see or have contact with her children. Sarah came to realize Warren Jeffs was grooming her daughter to eventually become his wife. She wrote a letter, refusing to give permission. While traveling on a four-wheeler, the vehicle flipped and fell on her. She was in the hospital fighting for a month to survive told she would most likely be a paraplegic if she did survive.

A few months later, still trying to heal from the accident, Sarah was told God no longer had a use for her. Therefore Sarah was cast out, thrown into a world she was taught to abhor and fear from birth.

How brainwashed can a mother be?

I did not like the fanciful dreams in the epilogue. Also, the author seemed to glory in any pain she had. She went on and on for pages. She needed to tell more interactions between she and the sister wives. She had a good story, but she drug parts out and shared too little on other parts.

Courage and Grace

The story shared by Mrs Allred shows her love for her children, and the love she had for her husband no matter how he treated her for the sake of Warren Jeffs. I couldn’t imagine going through what this loving mother went through. It breaks my heart to know there are still woman bound by the FLDS and their wicked and cruel leaders.

Terrible writing, terrible narration

It's clear that the author is relatively uneducated. Her storytelling is disjointed and feels like she lost pages of her manuscript before submitting it for publication because she jumps around from scenario to scenario. Although, to be fair, the narrator isn't the most skilled reader so that may be why. It might make more sense in print, I'm not sure. The narrator intones certain words in ways that change the entire meaning of certain lines (which is evident based on context clues.) It just reads very strangely. Not interesting at all even with a very compelling topic.

Yikes

The writing is terrible and Sarah Allred comes across like a head case.
The narration certainly didn’t do any favors. All in all, skip this one for your own sanity. The ick factor is off the freaking charts. There are better written and more interesting FLDS books offered on Audible.

Terrible Writing

Interesting story, but very hard to get past the terrible, cheesy writing. Maybe if I hadn't read Rachel Jeffs' book first I would have found Sarah more likeable.
