About this listen

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they've always known - and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

Mare Barrow's blood is red - the color of common folk - but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control. The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince - the friend - who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: She is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors. But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat. Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The narrator was annoying. The writing quality bad

I really liked the first book but expected the writing to improve with the second. It didn't. It declined horribly, and most of the time it seemed that the author was lost on what to say. Also, she used the words mumble, murmer, mutter, and grumble so many times it was annoying!!!! She needs to find another word for explaining a person talking. It made me wonder if she knew the real definition of murmer because half the time it's used it doesn't make sense within the casual or exciting conversation going on. The narrator is very breathy and pronounces things wrong sometimes and also mixes up accents or character voices. Another point is the author is inconsistent with the facts of her own world. Like at one point she says something has been going on for months for a character when at another point she reflects on how only a few weeks have gone by for this character. *sigh* I think this book has ruined the series for me.

pretty good

Way too much smirking going on, otherwise a good story and good narrator. I will buy the next book.

Whoa!

This second book started off really slowly. I had a hard time getting into it, but about chapter 17 it started picking up the pace. The death of one of the characters hit me hard, and I almost cried.

But, that ending... OMG! I am just glad I don’t have to wait until the author writes the next book. Ha ha!

Great plot, poor main character

I like the plot of this story, but I hate the main character. The writing is cheesy and predictable. It's an easy read, but the whole book was pretty forgettable.

Not as Intriguing as the First book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wish Mare would have been a little less whiny about her circumstances. It felt like most of the chapters were like this and I found it somewhat hard to get through.

If you’ve listened to books by Victoria Aveyard before, how does this one compare?

I have only read the first book in this series by her, I really enjoyed that book. However, after reading this one I am unsure if I will be willing to finish this series.

What does Amanda Dolan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She's a decent narrator, however, I don't think she should try to narrate books with so many different characters. I found it difficult to distinguish between them a lot of the time.
