Publisher's summary

On the road in a “borrowed” '36 Ford, nineteen-year-old Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins and his companion, Raymond "Mouse" Alexander, are on a perilous odyssey that takes them from Houston to a mysterious bayou world of voodoo, sex, revenge, and death. Their destination is desolate Pariah, Texas—Mouse's home once, and still home to his hated stepfather.

Encountering violent and unexpected threats, Easy and Mouse forge bonds that will link them in the decades that follow as they choose very different paths. Everything they ever knew about friendship and about themselves is coming apart at the seams.

The beginning

Loved it. Story cleared up questions about Easy and Mouse's origins. Struggled to understand the narrator.

Yes indeed!

This a beautifully written and spoken story of a moment in time of The Black experience. Mosley is a master at what he does as is Winfield.

Mosley is a master of the time machine!

The early years of Easy and Mouse were as sharp edged as those most readers are familiar with. Get intro to Mama Jo, and the desperation of Raymond “mouse” and the tight wire walk that is Easy Rawlins life from the beginning. Worth the listen save the short erotica segment that always seems out of place to this reader.

Love this Character

First, I love Walter Mosley 's Easy Rawlin's series of books. This character is so real and super cool. I started reading the series years ago with a Boo Club I joined. We would hear the book and then get together over dinner and have a deep discussion. It was great. Gone Fishin' has another great story where Easy just happens on more mess to get involved in. I love to listen when I'm on the airplane traveling an let the book totally engulf me. Walter Mosley has a way of bring his books to life and you become part of the story, on the side line looking in. The characters and very interesting and I can usually thing of someone in my life that resembles them. If your looking for a great mystery with a real life story, good characters and many laughs, try any of the books in this series.

Best EZ Rawlins Book Ever

Great twists in the characters’ backstories. Paul Winfield is an outstanding narrator. And I love the blues tracks between chapters. Short but sweet.

The Introduction

Again, a great Easy Rawlins novel. Not a mystery -- well, not in the truest sense (but you'll see what I mean when you get to the part about Clifton and why Mouse is so interested in him and his love starved girlfriend, Ernestine).

This is a story about the beginnings: Easy's uneasiness around the sour at first Mouse, and for good reason. Their voyage to Pariah. Easy's love of Momma Jo and later his love-sickness. What makes him so thirsty for books and reading and what drew him to California from Houston. It's all there and it's all beautiful.

On to the next one!
