About this listen

A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.

Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient's diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer request. From there, listeners follow as Dr. Levy performs the operation, and then we wait - right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families - to see the final results.

Dr. Levy's musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we see him come to his ultimate conclusion that, no matter what the results of the procedure are, "God is good," we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

Make a difference!

I loved this book! I’ve had several operations over the years and I’ve been blessed to have many health care providers who went that extra mile. The doctor who made a life impact, however, was a vascular surgeon who asked if he could pray for me before the surgery. It was a tremendous comfort and I’ll never forget him. During my career I was Director for Operations for a 200-physician network. I know several of them were spiritual - I wish they had the courage of Dr. Levy to step out in faith. So many people need that opportunity - it’s life changing. It’s a wonderful book for health care providers to read as an encouragement - many never know how much of a difference their kindness made to someone when they went beyond the clinical aspects of care!

I Am Thankful For This Book

I honestly wish I could give a long detailed review of this book. Explaining what this book does and covers just feels inadequate. I was brought to tears time and time again. It is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read.

I opened the book for an interesting perspective, and closed the book to find my closer to God.

Prayer, forgiving, and neurology

What a wonderful book! With gray story telling, Dr. Levy tells good stories and hard stories. He tells about the process to get the bravery to pray with patients and his discoveries of the need for us to forgive as the Lord forgives us. Loved it!

Prayer changes life.

I really enjoyed the book- I felt like I was in the surgery and the Doctor held my hand as he held God’s hand. The story let you see into the lives of many— not all safe in surgery but real life.
It also encourages all to remember that prayer is a life saver and you can find peace in it..
