Publisher's summary

Carole Seddon's trusty Renault is one of her most treasured possessions. So when it’s vandalized, there's only one person she will entrust with its repair: Bill Shefford, who’s been servicing the vehicles of the good citizens of Fethering for many years. But how could something like this happen in Fethering of all places? Then a note is shoved under Carole's kitchen door: Watch out. The car window was just the start. It appears that she’s been deliberately targeted. But by whom, and why?

Matters take an even more disturbing turn when a body is discovered at Shefford's Garage, crushed to death by a falling gearbox. People think it’s a tragic accident, but Carole and her neighbor Jude are not so sure. And the more they question, the more evidence they uncover of decidedly foul play.

As always Simon Brett delivered another highly entertaining cozy mystery with engaging characters and an entertaining plot. I look forward to the next book.

Why is this one not labeled as part of the series?

Why is this one not labeled as part of the series? 20 I’m guessing since that one seems to be missing. I’m just glad I searched through the rest of what Simon Brett wrote to find it.

Another excellent adventure with Carole and Jude

......Spoiler Alert......

FINALLY! Carole and Jude foresaw the potential for danger in confronting the bad guys and planned accordingly. I cheered when the police showed up because the women had planned for the obvious outcome of their confrontation.
Weird side story with the man whose wife is in a wheelchair "to punish him" and the fact that he was "in love" with Carole was hysterical. I would have loved to hear more of Carole's most inward thoughts about that situation.
I have come to think of Carole and Jude as friends and however much Carole's idiosyncrasies irritate (some) readers, I think that's because most of us are, if we're honest, more Carole than Jude.
One of the best things about the audio version of these books has been the readers: Geoffrey Howard (aka Ralph Cosham) and then Simon Brett deciding to take the job after Cosham died. Who better to put voice to characters than the author who created them?

Great small English town story

Good narration by the author. Clever story with authentic characters. One unanswered question left me hanging at the end.
