Publisher's summary

On dragons' wings, war begins.

Magic has returned to Earth.

A year ago, the dark elves breached the interstellar veil between our world and theirs. They slaughtered scores of innocents in the first battle of a war between magic and technology.

Then they vanished.

In the year since, Elizabeth Chambers has trained alongside Cassie "Starlight" Rogan in the special forces unit known as Task Force Devil. Their mission: to monitor the interstellar portal where the dark elves forced their way into our world.

Elizabeth, like Cassie, is one of only two "magic-sensitive" people on the planet who can control the powers of magic flowing back into our world. Unlike Cassie's healing magic, Elizabeth's magic is lethal, and she resists her deadly gifts. Soon, she will have no choice but to use them, because in a single night of fire and death, the dark elves have returned.

And they have sinister plans for humanity.

Contains mature themes.

I dig it

I had some issues with the women being portrayed as a little petulant after already asserting that they were intelligent and cognizant of their surroundings and situations but... hey... it wore off because you can't be both. I love the realism. it takes fantasy into a more "What would you really do?" by law, by state, by society, by nationality by humanity. How would we handle these situations? i have never seen a view like this ( in this genre) and I read... A LOT... On book 2 and ready to see where this goes in book 3. I'm looking forward to the other series by this author

Unneeded virtue signaling

What could happen been a really good story was sprinkled with unnecessary race bating and some feminist talking points. I listen to fantasy audio books to get away from all that.

Good story and performance

I was surprised by the shift in main characters but really enjoyed this perspective. This was an excellent sequel and fun. It was a good balance of action and character development. The story picks up a year later just before the Dark Elves invade Earth, and while they show up in a number of places, Canada is the main target again. The heroes fight to protect the civilians as they flee and then try to stop the culling. Best one liner is from the dwarf as Alex is treating his wounds. (It still makes me chuckle.)

Not as good as previous book.

Loved book one and was looking forward to this book. Sadly, I couldn’t finish it. This. book was not as entertaining as book one and I just could not get into it.
