Story
The colony world of Stittara is no ordinary planet. For the interstellar Unity of the Ceylesian Arm, Stittara is the primary source of anagathics: drugs that have more than doubled the human life span. But the ecological balance that makes anagathics possible on Stittara is fragile, and the Unity government has a vital interest in making sure the flow of longevity drugs remains uninterrupted, even if it means uprooting the human settlements.

Story
In Earth's distant future, Tyndel is both teacher and mentor, a staunch devotee to his conservative and rigidly structured religious culture. Then a rogue infection of nanotechnology transforms him into a "demon", something more than human, and he is forced into exile, fleeing to the more technologically advanced space-faring civilization that lies to the north, one that his own righteous people consider evil. Although shaken by his transformation, he has the rare talent required to become a space pilot.

Story
Five thousand years in the future, humankind has spread across thousands of worlds, and more than a dozen different governments exist in an uneasy truce. But human beings have found no signs of other life anywhere approaching human intelligence. This changes when scientists discover a sunless planet they name Danann, traveling the void just beyond the edge of the galaxy at such a high speed that it cannot be natural. Its continents and oceans have been sculpted and shaped, with but a single megaplex upon it - close to perfectly preserved.

Trystin Desoll grows up fighting against religious fanatics and becomes a hero, a first-class pilot, then, amazingly, a spy. What do you do if you're a relatively humane soldier fighting millions of suicidal volunteers on the other side who know that they are utterly right, and you are utterly wrong, with no middle ground? Trystin Desoll has an idea.

Editorial reviews
In Haze, L. E. Modesitt, Jr., tells a story of interplanetary intrigue from the future.
The star of the novel is Keir Roget, an intelligence agency of the Federation, Earth’s Communist China-style totalitarian government. Roget’s sent to investigate the people of Haze, a planet that earned its nickname from the grey manmade cloud that protects it from outside scrutiny. As he investigates this advanced civilization, his thoughts turn to an earlier run-in with a group of terrorists in Utah.
William Dufris narrates with a deep, adenoidal voice, the steady pace of his narration slowing down as he brings dramatic life to dialogue.

Story
Centuries in the past, mankind fought a seemingly unbeatable adversary from sector to sector across the Spiral Arm until the war ground to a standstill and the Enemy withdrew. Believing that they had won, the citizens of the galaxy rebuilt. The Inner Worlds, which had escaped the worst of the war's ravages, became even more insular, while the Rim worlds adopted a free and easy way with law and order. Now, hundreds of years after their withdrawal, the Enemy is back - and this time they'll be satisfied with nothing less than the extinction of the galaxy.

Cobras are technologically-enhanced warriors bred to fight an alien menace no ordinary human can withstand. At the center of action, on the Cobra world of Aventine, is the legendary Moreau clan. While the Cobras are necessary in times of war, in times of peace, they are often reviled by those they have saved. Now, the Cobras have resisted a second invasion of the alien Troft forces, forcing the Troft to a stalemate - even converting some thoughtful Troft into uneasy allies against their kin.

Great views of alternate governing styles in Space
Performance was mono tone but I really enjoyed the overall story. By the end I wanted to move to Haze. The wonderful imagination of L. E Modesitt, Jr. will take you on a ride through the galaxy to a mysterious "alien" planet where you will learn of a far superior culture and civilization.

Hard SciFi
This is traditional hard SciFi. It isn't action packed, but it is filled with depth and introspection on us, how we work, and our place in the universe. Well worth the read.

Excellent story
Would you consider the audio edition of Haze to be better than the print version?
This is one of the first books I have listened to prior to reading. I do not feel I missed anything.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character, Roget, is my favorite character. It shows a person willing to look at all sides of a problem while trying to stay true to his responsibilities.
Which character – as performed by William Dufris – was your favorite?
He did a great job with every character. The tone used to differentiate fell true to what I perceived the character to be like.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I listen while commuting. I found myself waiting in the car at times not wanting to drag myself away from the story.
Any additional comments?
Well worth the time and money for a story well told.
