About this listen

When there is an industrial accident, some of the Morningstar Strain is actually released. The doctor who discovered the strain and her assistant will have to fight their way through Sprinters and Shamblers to save themselves, the vaccine, and the base. Then they discover that it wasn't an accident at all - somebody inside the facility did it on purpose. The war with the RSA and the infected is far from over.

Zombies have been a potent cultural force for decades. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of zombie-themed stories out there. But which ones are the very best? And which zombie audiobooks will have you double-checking the locks and sleeping with a baseball bat next to your bed?

The 3rd book was such a disappointment that I hesitated on whether to try this 4th book, but I'm glad I did. Though not as good as the first two books in the series, the writing and plot were more in line with them. Given how much better this 4th book was over the 3rd, I think it would have been better to have rewritten the 3rd book entirely before continuing on to the 4th in the series.

A big part of what was missing were all the characters that made the first 2 books so good. As the ghost writer for the 3rd book killed them off, there was little hope of them returning. Some of the new characters that were decent, but overall the cast lacked the depth the original cast had.

I would probably listen to a 5th book, should there be one, but without a fresh plot and resounding characters, it would suffer from the same as other series, where the story simply drags on, hoping to make a few more bucks from devoted readers/listeners.

Back on Track… Mostly

This author clearly has little understanding of weapons, tactics, and such. The descriptions used in the action sequences were dismal, and the story as it plays out is pretty subpar.

As to the narrator...well, he has the same annoying overemphasis of the last sentence of a paragraph which he has had since the series began.

The original author was far better.

It has been a long time between drinks with this series. The last in the series was released in 2012. I am lucky to remember what day it is, let alone the details of a zombie story I listened to 5 years ago. Since then I have listened to 242 other zombie titles. So it was definitely going to be a mighty effort to get back into the swing of things with this one.

I’ll start off with the things I liked about this one. The narration was good and only needed to be sped up to 1.25x speed. This in turn meant that the $/per hour ratio was good. The story in itself is standalone, so if you are worried about it being such a long time between drinks. Don’t worry, it does reveal enough about what has happened for it to make sense. Another factor I enjoyed was the lack of descriptive sex/rape scenes which seem to be in so many end of the world titles these days. In fact not a lot of swearing in this one… well not that I noticed, I am sure there was some, but it wasn’t over the top.

Ok now onto the things which I thought ‘meh’ about (by the way I saying ‘meh’ to appear cool to my kids, so please don’t hold that against me). The character development of some of the newer people injected into the story just seemed strange. I mean if someone who is critical to the story is mad… I want to know why and even the how. Actually, I thought if things were just a little bit more expanded in terms of character development this one could easily have grown into another book in the series. I got the feeling that the author was glad to get this one out and done with. Which in my view was ashamed because I did like it. But after reading my reviews for the previous in the series I suspect I liked those earlier one’s more!

I just read that the original author had died. I’m not sure if that is true, but if it is, it certainly explains a lot.

Would I buy another title by Brad Munson? Yes you bet!
Would I listen to another title narrated by Oliver Wyman? Certainly?
Was this the best conclusion to the series? Probably not. But I enjoyed it nonetheless and you can’t ask for much more than that!

This is the fourth book in the Morningstar Strain series. In keeping with the theme of my other reviews in this series, the battle sequences are the best part of the book without a doubt. Not only are the survivors battling the infected, they are also locked into a full engagement with the RSA pseudo government forces.

I had thought that this was the final book in the series, however, I was pleased to learn that a fifth book is planned for July of this year.

Strong battle sequence

I've hoped that this book would be written and made in to an audible and the wyman would continue the narration after the untimely dead of the original author I did not think the story would continue Brad Munson you have done the story proud and I felt like you pick up right were it should and you hit a home run very happy not sure if it goes on from here but would be cool if it did

so very worth the wait

This author takes the remaining characters from 1-3 and there ends the similarities. The writing is well padded, over descriptive military wanna be's w*t dream. What a joke! Heck even Oliver Wyman who narrated the firs three books has changed the voices and personas of the original characters.. unrecognizable.
I promise you this is a huge disappointment. Stop with the third book and be satisfied. It ends well and you won't find anything but frustration and tedium with Healers

What a sham!
