Publisher's summary

"One of the most hilarious, heart-flippingly romantic, charmingly observant writers in the game right now." —Becky Albertalli, author of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda

A road trip rom-com about heartbreak, social media hijinks, and learning to be happy with who you are, perfect for fans of Heartstopper, Becky Albertalli and Phil Stamper.

When their ex-boyfriends get together and start Instagramming a disgustingly perfect summer of love, Jack and Nate decide to concoct a mutual Insta-worthy summer adventure of their own to prove they’re just fine and everything’s great.

Of course, it’s hard to have an epic summer road trip when they’re stuck in a van with Nate's mid-life crisis-bound parents and his annoying younger sister. And it’s been years since Jack and Nate have said more than a few sentences to each other. But their followers don’t have to know any of that.

How hard could faking the high life be? Posting as @TheHeartBreakBoys, the duo stumbles into one hilarious situation after another—and each discover that maybe the cure for heartbreak has been the boy riding next to him all along.

An amazing take

This is such an amazing take on a typical love story. Almost enemies to lovers, but not really. I absolutely loved listening to this book, and I can’t wait to re-listen in a few months. A cute coming of age story.

Simplicity of the message.

Not a “deep” story, but some nice heartfelt moments. Simple premise, predictable conclusion, feel-good with a tad too much syrup.

Simple and enjoyable teen story

Going back in time to high school politics and teen angst is always interesting. It's even better to read books where LGBT characters are front and center, dealing with issues other than being bullied or living in the closet; this story does just that. The two main characters represent opposites and innocence, creating a rich character tapestry. The story is straight forward, but the journey is fun and makes you appreciate the simpler time of a kid. It's a time when a kiss represents something special and something to ponder over. Try this if you want to take a break from reality and explore a time of innocence.

I was reminded of young love and coming out.

I was 16 in 1976 attending a Pentecostal church where I was treated as demon possessed and an abomination. It was a difficult time to be courageous and out but I was and I was shamed for not being normal. I was a version of Jack when it wasn’t cool. Listening to this was wonderful. It made me weep and laugh out loud. It ended as expected but it was still a great journey and tag along for the ride. I immediately put on Embers by Owl City and joined the dance.

Super enjoyable! Great premise and storyline.

Was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was hard to put down and I pretty much listened straight through. Narrators did account derail job with one minor exception: I wish the narrators would have coordinated their voices for Jack better. Nate’s chapters voiced Jack in a deep pitch that was odds with Jack’s voice in Jack’s chapters. Gave a really different feel to Jack’s persona.

One other minor irritation was the Americanized references in British characters living in the UK: they wouldn’t have called it an eggplant emoji, for instance, it would have been an aubergine. There were several such anachronisms throughout the book.

Overall, though, I still give it 5 stars. These minor annoyances didn’t detract from the recommendation to read/listen to this book. Loved it!

A good perspective

This was a fun journey to be riding along on. I kept having to remind myself that Jack and Nate weee just sixteen because they seemed so much older in a lot of ways. I think most of us can identify with the heartbreak. I wish I’d had someone to help me find my way out of it like these boys do. I adore the mom characters! It’s a very sweet story.

adorable know the end at the beginning story

Sure, you will know the conclusion of the book by the second line it seems. Nonetheless, do continue on; The lovely trip is more than worth it. using a plot vehicle as old as the Odyssey, we follow our two young polar opposites on a trip through an England you might never have heard of or seen. we experience a society in which young gay people seem to be both accepted and rejected simultaneously, and our young protagonists experience both. with a bit of cute social commentary on the vapid social media environment and some charming if stereotypical characters, we wait for the inevitable happen and cheer when it does. The narration is quite fun and good except occasionally. Jack, who is 16 sounds a bit more like 24 but but Nate is appropriately laconic and afraid. waiting for the time to bloom. I do hope there are other books by the author. this one gave me several hours of pure guiltless pleasure. thanks
