About this listen

The National Book Award-winning author of Felix Ever After delivers a beautifully tender story of two grumpy/sunshine, fake-dating actors navigating their love story both on and offscreen—perfect for fans of Casey McQuiston and Alexis Hall.

Logan Gray is Hollywood's bad boy—a talented but troubled actor who the public loves to hate. Mattie Cole is an up‑and‑coming golden boy, adored by all but plagued by insecurities.

When Logan and Mattie are cast as leads in a new romantic film, Logan claims that Matt has “zero talent,” sending the film’s publicity into a nosedive. To create positive buzz, the two are persuaded into a fake‑dating scheme—but as the two actors get to know their new characters, real feelings start to develop.

As public scrutiny intensifies and old wounds resurface, the two must fight for their relationship and their love.

A heartfelt, hopeful, and nuanced story about identity, healing, and growth.

It feels genuine

First of all, the vocal performances brought so much depth to the characters and was a good representation, an incredible performance truly. The story from start to finish was very moving and unpredictable just like the emotions of the characters but it's what made the book what it is. This isn't a perfect romance story where they fall in love by chance and live happily ever after with no conflicts but the conflicts are genuine and the way they overcome them is because of one another despite them not being together. It's a story about the impact someone can have on your life and it's moving. I 100% recommend!

Reflection

Listening to this book and hearing the characters’ stories and traumas has made me stop and think on my own traumas and how I need to heal. There’s a lot of hurting in this book and it may not be for everyone but if you can bear through the painful to hear parts the story is absolutely beautiful.

One of the best audiobook productions

The mix of mediums within the audio and full cast feel made this a standout audiobook experience for me.
I loved the sound design was skillfully done for the emotional MM romance. This was heavy but beautiful.

Almost made me cry. 5/5 Stars

This book was fantastically done. I was expecting more of a rom com feel, but it was really an exploration of Mattie and Logan's personal traumas and self growth. I liked that it was set in the Hollywood scene and that it deviated from the normal tropes and that the conflict wasn't completely due to drugs and cheating, but rather because both characters needed to grow. I also appreciated the emphasis on mental health and that this book showed that even happy people struggle with mental health. I liked the ending, too, which showed that you don't necessarily get to choose who you love, but you do have control over how you show another person you love them. The emphasis on consent was also incredibly well done, and it added depth and made the spicy scenes even better. I really, really enjoyed this book, and the audio was fantastic. I liked the sound effects and full cast. I give this 5/5 stars
