About this listen
"I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance money." (Sherlock Holmes to Dr. Watson in The Sign of Four)
Early 1902: On the eve of Newgate Prison's demolition, Watson spies Holmes leaving a public sale of the prison's miscellany in the company of a beautiful stranger, and in possession of an unusual trophy–the death mask of a woman who, more than 20 years earlier, had been executed for the murder of her three children. Holmes agrees to satisfy Watson's curiosity about the memento by recounting the decades-old history of its subject.
Late December, 1878. A young Sherlock Holmes is living in a modest room at Montague Street, dividing his time between the lecture halls and the laboratories, "...studying all those branches of science which might make me more efficient". At the shop of the eccentric, old bookseller, Brodie, Holmes is introduced to the beautiful Violet Rose Turner, the young mistress and protégé of Professor James Moriarty, and the mother of his three children.
When a house fire takes the lives of Moriarty's children, it is presumed to be accidental, until Miss Turner's suspicious conduct prompts a further investigation, which reveals that the children had been poisoned before the fire was deliberately set. Miss Turner is charged with the murders. As her trial proceeds, Holmes sets out to prove her innocence, yet each of his discoveries seems only to confirm her guilt even as the court-room testimony assures her conviction. Not until the sentence is carried out does Holmes happen upon a scrap of evidence that sets off "...that mixture of imagination and reality which is the basis of my art", and leads to the exposure of a brilliant and sinister deception.
Hidden Fires is equal parts complex puzzle, Victorian era thriller, and an "origin story" that explains familiar elements of Holmes' background and character: a distrust of women that exempts the "Violets" who are always treated chivalrously, an acquaintance with the "street urchin" Wiggins, the acquisition of a priceless Stradivarius, and the real inspiration for that bullet-marked V. R. above his sitting room mantle.
Join Watson as Holmes recounts "...one of the most extraordinary narratives of my friend's career–indeed, one which may have shaped what he was to become."

There is a persistent and incorrect idea, reinforced by countless film misrepresentations, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always staid and dull British chaps of middle years (or older), with Holmes a spry, cranky, and impatient eccentric, and Watson a white-haired and portly Boobus Brittanicus, a la Nigel Bruce. Students of the true and Canonical Sherlock Holmes know this to be a falsehood.

The director threw himself into a seat in the front row of the theater before hollering, "Start at the beginning of the play!" That's when the magic happened. The thick, red curtains swept apart, and, suddenly, we were looking at 221B Baker Street! It was just as I'd imagined it: there were two chairs in front of a fireplace, a skull sitting on the mantelpiece next to a stack of letters that had been stabbed into the wood with a knife.

Story
“From now on, I am going to be Sherlock Holmes, the World’s Greatest Cat Detective.” With those words, my friend Spot decided he would become a crime-solving kitty. “And you, of course,” he said dramatically, “will be my faithful friend, Dr. John Watson. The one who writes down all of my adventures and shares them with the world! We’ll be famous! Everyone will know the name ‘Sherlock Holmes, the World’s Greatest Cat Detective’!” I wasn’t too worried. I was sure that, by morning, Spot would have forgotten all about becoming Sherlock Holmes. Boy, was I wrong.

Great Holmes Story
I really enjoyed this story of a younger Holmes. He is telling a story to Watson of a mystery from the time before Watson. It has twists and turns and is a good listen.

Great Story and Professional Narration & Production
This is a very entertaining story. The characters are well written and stick well to the original. There is also a nice smattering of origin stories sprinkled throughout.
The narration is also well voiced. The characters are consistent and enjoyable. The production values are good as well.

Great early Sherlock Holmes story!
Hidden Fires by Jane Rubino is a wonderfully entertaining and engaging story of a young Sherlock Holmes before he became a consulting detective. In this book, Holmes relays the story of Violet Rose Turner, Prof Moriarty’s companion, and the death of their 3 children in a horrific fire. Holmes tries to help prove Violet innocent, but it thwarted at every turn. This Rubino story fits very solidly within the umbrella of Sherlock Holmes manuscripts. It is an original story, yet it contains elements and reflects characters and other bits and pieces of the original ACD books. It is a thriller and mystery with twists and turns from start to finish. The narration by Michael Langan is outstanding. His professional performance creates unique voices, accents and inflections etc for the many characters, which brings them and the story to life.
