About this listen

I'd had it with magic. Me and it were no longer friends.

This addict went cold turkey. Five years I'd been clean for, not even a taste of the good stuff. No longer a space cadet.

Life was quiet, life was good. Life was as boring as a conference on boring hosted by Professor Boring McBoring from Boringsville University. So, I have to admit, that when I got drawn back into the Hidden world I wasn't as reluctant as I made out.

What I wasn't expecting was having to deal with a dragon holding the dwarves' gold hostage, accidentally unleashing a maniac on the city, and fighting for my life as everything goes into free fall. Oh, plus I've got myself lumbered with a rather keen wizard-in-training.

Now I'm almost out of time, certainly out of luck, but I have responsibilities and I will fight until the bitter end. Problem being, the end is looking decidedly nasty, and a blast from our collective past threatens to leave the entire world a barren wasteland.

Hi, I'm Faz Pound, and, once again, you can call me Black Spark, Dark Magic Enforcer.

I'm also considering swearing off the magic again.

Maybe.

Spark is happy to be back!

Cold turkey, Spark went off magic cold turkey. He has been clean for 5 years and unhappy for 5 years. Using magic is part of who he is, it took 5 years for him to accept that. With the excitement of being the big man in Candiff – again- Spark does a job for the new boss, Dancer. He was hired by the dwarfs, to remove the dragon from their gold room.

In addition to the spectacular architecture of dwarf city, Spark learned obscured information about the dwarf society. Unbeknownst to Spark, completing the mission was the beginning of saving the world. Defeating a dragon is a tall order, which even Spark cannot do alone.

Dragon was thousands of years old and the creator of all things magic. His fanatical followers, the wyrmling, were incensed to commit genocide of the impure Hidden in Dragon’s name. The Hidden, trolls, vampires, gremlins and magic users band with Spark to eradicate their madness.

The fights are good and there is lots of magic used for exciting reading. This is very fasted paced. Spark visits for Mage’s greasy breakfast. Grandma is only included long enough for Spark to say hello and I love you to Spark. Spark gives the kid, Mithnite a favor and lets him tag alone. Kate still the supportive vampire that Spark loves. Dancer and Spark acknowledge their bonding in Japan has made them more them more than boss and enforcer. A healthy food store makes an appearance offering alternatives to Mage’s butter and fat.

Spark first two days back to work, was rough. By the end of the story, his is experiencing the magic payback sickness again. He could use another 5 years to recuperate.

Ok, we're done here

I have finally reached the point where I can't listen to this series anymore. At first, it was charming with a goofy protagonist and interesting world building. Yes, there were enough similies to sink a ship and there were so many things that defied description that you began to wonder if the protagonist (or his author) were simply not very good at descriptions. But the story was interesting enough that I kept coming back. This time, I won't be back again. In fact, I don't think I'm even going to finish this one. I have some articles from the Harvard Business Review that sound more compelling for my rush hour commute that finding out how this one ends. Farewell, Black Spark.
