Amber McCloud’s dream is to become cheer captain at the end of the year, but it’s an extra-tall order to be joyful and spirited when the quarterback of your team has been killed in a car accident. For both the team and the squad, watching Robbie get replaced by newcomer Jack Walsh is brutal. And when it turns out Jack is actually short for Jaclyn, all hell breaks loose.

The players refuse to be led by a girl, the cheerleaders are mad about the changes to their traditions, and the fact that Robbie’s been not only replaced but outshined by a QB who wears a sports bra has more than a few Atherton Alligators in a rage. Amber tries for some semblance of unity, but it quickly becomes clear that she's only got a future on the squad and with her friends if she helps them take Jack down.

Just one problem: Amber and Jack are falling for each other, and if Amber can't stand up for Jack and figure out how to get everyone to fall in line, her dream may come at the cost of her heart.

Dahlia Adler's Home Field Advantage is a sparkling romance about fighting for what—or who—you truly want.

Absolutely loved the book and the narrator! Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good queer love story.

Amazing narration

I mean, seriously. It is just so sweet, even while giving an honest look at all of the hardships that queer kids face, especially in places that aren't the most progressive/friendly. The writing is so fresh and so gloriously perfect, Dahlia hits the voice just right. It makes my heart want to scream and soar. I graduated from high school in 2009 and so many of us queer kids never came out until after we graduated. But it's nice to see that arc bending slowly, to see pride take a place in the public world.

I wish this book would be added to every high school curriculum. It's that necessary.

This is the cutest book in the world.

I loved this because of the great representation of queer identities and the story is definitely worth a listen. It is so relatable as someone who lives in an area that is not diverse or welcoming. The bravery of the characters is very heartwarming!

Brave characters!

High school can be hard enough without coming out. Even if you are a popular cheerleader or a football player. so they become beards for each other.

Then there is the so-called good Christian girl, who isn't so good, as she becomes more mean girl than christ-like.

The voices were superb and the story was full of tension and questions and struggle and I loved every single second of it.

A perfect novel

I wish the story was longer and maybe hoping for a second book that continues their story

A great story line that was really original

I really enjoyed this as it brought back some nostalgia of playing football on the boys team as a girl. Lori Prince’s narration is always amazing plus the story and characters really brought everything together.

Good story

This book gave me so many reflections and reminders of my own coming out story in high school with the joys, the taboo and the hardship/challenge of it all. Truly had me in my feelings from happy to empowered to frustrated and hopeful! This book is totally worth the read!

The lesbian/queer/bi high school coming out story I’ve always wanted!

Home Field Advantage is a YA, ff, contemporary, sports, romance set in Florida, USA. The main characters are Juniors in High School. I bought this book in a sale quite a while ago but never got around to listening to it because YA isn't typically my jam. The blurb sounded good though so I wanted to give it a try. I'm glad I finally did. This was a really good book. The author did a good job with setting the scene and making the characters feel authentic. The story kept me interested until the end. I would recommend this book. The only thing I would caution people for is that some of the characters in this book have not yet come out and there is homophobia and also threats of forced outing. I prefer the LGBTQ books that I read not include metaphorically hiding in closets and homophobia, but given this is a YA book, I can look beyond that. The narration was good. Overall, I give 4 - 4.5 stars.
