About this listen

She’s All That meets What If It’s Us in this New York Times bestselling hate-to-love YA romantic comedy from the coauthor of Five Feet Apart Rachael Lippincott and debut writer Alyson Derrick.

Alex Blackwood is a little bit headstrong, with a dash of chaos and a whole lot of flirt. She knows how to get the girl. Keeping her on the other hand…not so much. Molly Parker has everything in her life totally in control, except for her complete awkwardness with just about anyone besides her mom. She knows she’s in love with the impossibly cool Cora Myers. She just…hasn’t actually talked to her yet.

Alex and Molly don’t belong on the same planet, let alone the same college campus. But when Alex, fresh off a bad (but hopefully not permanent) breakup, discovers Molly’s hidden crush as their paths cross the night before classes start, they realize they might have a common interest after all. Because maybe if Alex volunteers to help Molly learn how to get her dream girl to fall for her, she can prove to her ex that she’s not a selfish flirt. That she’s ready for an actual commitment. And while Alex is the last person Molly would ever think she could trust, she can’t deny Alex knows what she’s doing with girls, unlike her.

As the two embark on their five-step plans to get their girls to fall for them, though, they both begin to wonder if maybe they’re the ones falling…for each other.

Critic reviews

"A dual narration by Natalie Naudus and Valentina Ortiz delivers a view of two witty young women who are finding their bearings during their first year of college. In alternating chapters, Naudus delivers the words of Alex, who worries about leaving her alcoholic mother and girlfriend. Ortiz renders shy Molly’s anxiety and ambivalence toward her overbearing Korean mother. What’s clear to both young women is their distaste for each other. But Molly acknowledges that Alex can help her win the heart of Cora, on whom she’s crushing. Though the heroines are unaware of their mutual attraction, both narrators make it apparent to listeners, along with their comfort with queerness and their slow path to their developing selves." Crushes & Self Awareness

Will the awkward and quiet high schooler be able to become the person she wants to be and have a chance with her crush at college? Will the confident girl with swagger be able to help and perhaps become a better person? This book is a wonderfully rich story of two young women struggling to know themselves, believe in themselves and have the confidence to be their true selves. Realistic, sweet, awkward, funny, heartfelt and full of truth. A great book narrated beautifully.

Sweet Story

A very sweet sapphic story. Enjoyed the performance as well as the narrative. I’m a bit upset with myself for not having listened/read this story earlier.

Really fun and enjoyable!

I really enjoyed “She Gets the Girl”. Natalie Naudus and Valentina Ortiz did a wonderful job narrating the story. I was afraid that I would end up finding one, or both, of the girls annoying, but no! They were both fun and likable characters. Molly is kind and empathetic, Alex is hilarious and an absolute mood, and both are relatable. I really liked and appreciated the fact that each girl had their own personal plots and things they had to overcome, and it wasn’t just complete fluff. It did take a few chapters for me to really get into the story, but after that, I couldn’t stop listening! I will say that, like any young adult romance novel, there were some scenes that were cringey.

Overall, it was a really fun and enjoyable read!

Cute love story

I loved the writing style of this book, each chapter switches between the view point of the two main characters. The characters felt genuine, but many times I found myself shaking my head at the naivety of the main character Molly. Regardless, it’s a beautiful coming of age LGBTQ+ story that I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend to anyone needing a lighter/feel good escape.

Cute romcom

Recommended by someone I love dearly…this book shares a story lived by many young adults working their way through life. This book helped me see that the relationships are not that different for teens attracted to same sex from traditional boy/girl relationships. It’s a romcom to the fullest…and a great read if you’re striving to understand different views.

It was quite capturing.

I loved it from start to finish. It really did pay off well and I got really into the story and visuals. Except if you pop quizzed me on what they looked like I might fail hard. Cus all I got was my head cannon being shattered by hearing one was blonde. That aside I liked the character development and side characters. I can recommend it. It may even hit close to home.

My only pet peeve was relating the main character's tastes one moment and then thinking they are basic af the next because they can't even enjoy simple art things. And they really got on their "better than you" train about art and music.

Other than that sort scene or two annoying me, I think it's good.

Absolutely perfect!

I never ever thought I'd describe a book as "sweet", let alone give it 5 stars. And yet, here I am giving a "sweet" story 5 stars. Everything about this story was just right - I mean absolutely spot on. No spoilers, but the premise, the relationship progression, the character development, everything was just so well done. One of the best I've read in a while, and just what I needed at an especially difficult time in my life. I just wish there was more time with those two at the end. But still. Highly recommend.
