About this listen

Be encouraged! You're already "doing it right" just by doing it.

  • a must-have resource for parents who homeschool or who want to start
  • from the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside Movement
  • equips parents with the confidence and tools they need to give their children the education they dream of and deserve

During the past five years, homeschooling rates have been on the rise and show no signs of slowing. But many parents lack confidence, questioning whether they are doing it right (or whether they should take the plunge at all). With so many voices offering conflicting advice, it's hard to know where to start and where to go from there.

A homeschooling mother of five and founder of 1000 Hours Outside, Ginny Yurich draws from her years of experience and research, as well as her master's degree in education from the University of Michigan, to encourage and equip parents who want to give homeschooling a try or want to improve their experience.

Starting from the standpoint of "you're doing it right" instead of "you're doing it wrong," Ginny helps parents understand that just by choosing to homeschool they are:

  • learning through living
  • allowing for individual timelines
  • leaving space for boredom
  • providing multiage experiences
  • teaching self-reliance
  • offering freedom
  • slowing down
  • and more!

If you've been on the fence about homeschooling or wondering if you're doing it all wrong, let Ginny encourage you in all you've already accomplished and equip you for even greater things ahead.

This book was a great summer listen to help encourage me to keep going for another homeschool year.

What an encouragement!

This is a wonderful book for homeschool moms. We need more encouragement on our journey. It is a marathon that sometimes seems too heavy and never-ending. And we feel like we are carrying the weight of our children’s future on our shoulders. This book helps us understand that we are not alone and that we are doing so much more than we realize. As a homeschool mom at the end of her journey with three girls with dyslexia (one graduated and 2 more graduating in the next two years), I wish I had this book earlier. It takes a lot of strength, willpower, and God’s strength and grace to go the distance and we need more cheerleaders on the sidelines telling us we can do it. Ginny’s book really resonated with me and I am here with her saying to the other moms, “You can do this! No one will ever know or love your children better than you. No one is better equipped to teach your children and prepare them for life than you!”

Great encouragement!

Thank you for speaking to the mother who is wondering if it’s worth it, if homeschooling is the right thing to do. If we are doing enough, or too much. Thank you for seeing all of it and speaking to us.

You are doing it right!

Long time follower of Ginny and 1000hrs outside. This is no surprise incredible! Her voice feels like a warm hug. I feel so encouraged, valued and honored to homeschool my kids. Truly a 10/10 listen, will be recommending to all of my homeschooling friends.

Ginny details this book so well and references some great authors I've heard her interview on her podcast. I highly recommend this book to the families with doubt, interested in making the sacrifice to push conventional and outdated education practices for themselves and their kids.

An absolute must read for the families with doubt!

As a mom who loves the idea of homeschooling but for a variety of reasons cannot at this time, I was worried I would leave this book feeling guilty. That is NOT the case. I feel so encouraged to help my boys come home from school and engage in trying and doing new things because we learn by doing. Just last week they were asking how a person gets a job and my answer fell flat. After reading this book, I am inspired to role play with them, draw job maps, skills required for different types of jobs, etc. The issue isn’t that my boys aren’t hungry to learn - even though they are in the public school system, their minds and bodies still want to engage in learning through real life activities. It’s my job as their parent to not sit on the side lines but take the beautiful inspiration and practical advice Ginny shares to make it happen. Please read this book and take to heart the wisdom and relatability in it’s pages.
