About this listen

The classic guide to teaching children at home for a new generation of homeschooling parents.

In 2019, there were more than two million children being homeschooled. That number doubled during the pandemic and is now likely to continue increasing as more parents worry that school might not be the best place for their children to learn and grow.

Teach Your Own helped launch the homeschooling movement; now, its timeless and revolutionary message of recognizing the ways children come to understand the world has been updated for today’s environment. Parents and caregivers will discover how to navigate:

  • Learning in a classroom versus learning in the world
  • The difference between a learning difficulty (which we all experience every time we try to learn anything) and a learning disability.
  • Schedules that achieve the homeschooling-work-life balance that you want as a family
  • The relationship between learning and play
  • Homeschooling and technology
  • And much more

John Holt's warm understanding of children and his passionate belief in every child's ability to learn have made this book an essential resource for over 40 years to homeschooling families.

Overall great, just felt like the most impactful information was in the last chapter. I wish there was more specific details on how to get setup to homeschool.

Undeniably one of the most useful and helpful book on homeschooling and unschooling that I’ve read so far. Pleasant and engaging narrating voice.

From top to bottom, this is the most helpful and encouraging outline of how homeschool exists as a viable educational option for children and families. I especially like how it doesn’t take a position of anti-school, but focuses on learning and formation of children.

Comprehensive & Encouraging

Having read How Children Learn, I didn’t find this book to be repetitive; instead it built on the basis of John Holt’s previous book and attributed new definitions and examples of how and why homeschooling can and should work.

John and Pat do well in the last few chapters explaining how homeschooling and public school can work together. In truth, they’re both correct that not everyone wants nor trusts their kids enough to be “unschoolers” and not every family wants to spend time with their children and homeschool them generally.

I do recommend.

Had I been on the fence about homeschooling my child, I certainly would no longer be after listening to this book. Helpfully updated to our post COVID times, this is a phenomenal resource for affirming what I understood naturally to be true, the teaching our own children is best, but also what kind of structure may also facilitate most authentic and lasting learning. This really helped me see the opportunities to partner with schools and others and give my child a truly valuable education.

Encouraging and informative

Unschooling is not my brand of homeschooling. Even after listening to the book I am still not convinced. I did however appreciate the resources in the appendix.

It is just not my brand of homeschooling.
