For stroke survivors & loved ones - a must read

What makes this wonderful book so useful is that it offers much valuable information while demystifying complex medical language. The extensive information is delivered in digestible amounts. Most importantly it provides background and language to communicate with the physicians. It solves the disconcerting situation of being a patient or caregiver and not know what to ask or how to interpret information due to a lacking of foundation of knowledge about stroke and the brain.

The book also provided much evidence regarding recent science concerning the mind body spirit connection. It was refreshing to hear this holistic approach augmenting more mainstream medicine.

One of my greatest takeaways is that it puts recovery into the hands of both the caregiver and the survivor. The author stresses the point about how important participation is for optimum recovery.

The chapters about advocating for a loved one in a hospital were illuminating. They highlighted the need for vigilance as well as engagement with hospital staff to ensure the best treatment.

The book even provided me with an understanding some of insurance peculiarities and how to navigate them effectively.

I especially appreciated that each chapter listed essential takeaways. These bullet points enable a quick read to get the idea of the most important parts of the chapter. This is a book that can be re-read at different points of recovery to gain new insights with each reading.

While the author is compassionate, she is candid about responsibilities needed for change. The stories were also helpful and hopeful for long-term recovery.

The immensely helpful content is enhanced by the author’s own voice. Not only is it crystal clear and easy to follow but the empathy and concern contained in the book is evident in her voice.

For More Than Just Strokes

There are three main reasons to read this book: 1) it is an excellent guide to walk the patient and caregiver through the stroke recovery process; 2) it has excellent advice on how to avoid a stroke in the first place; and 3) it is also a great guide for happy living - independent of a stroke.

5-star source of valuable information

Hope After Stroke should be required listening (and reading) for all humans! So much practical information that we, as a family, had to discover the hard way after my Mom had a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak. True to the definition of "holistic", Tsgoyna covers all aspects of stroke recovery taking into account both the survivor's and caregiver's physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. The chapter on sex after stroke (a topic often avoided in the midst of other aspects of recovery) was handled elegantly and was enlightening. Tsgoyna has consolidated her many years of training, experience and research into this powerful guide that will truly make a difference for stroke survivors and caregivers.

Comforting and easy to listen to!

I have this in print but just purchased the audio. Listening to the author’s voice is so comforting and easy to listen to. It makes me feel like the therapist is right there with me. It’s great for caregivers who are busy and can’t sit and read a book as well as for the stroke patient who has trouble reading. This book
has tons of practical advice and resources. It’s amazing.
I highly recommend listening to this audio version.
