About this listen

War rages in the Caradryad Sector. Worlds are falling to madness and rebellion, and the great war machine of the Imperium is moving to counter the threat. Amongst its agents is Inquisitor Covenant. Puritan, psyker, expert swordsman, he reserves an especial hatred for those of his order who would seek to harness the power of Ruin as a weapon.

Summoned to an inquisitorial conclave, Covenant believes he has uncovered such a misguided agent and prepares to denounce the heretic Talicto before his fellows. But when the gathering is attacked and many left dead in its wake, Covenant vows to hunt down Talicto and discover the truth behind the mysterious cult apparently at the heart of the massacre, the Unseen. In the murky plot into which he is drawn, Covenant knows only one thing for certain: trust no one.

good story and voices are tolerable. good pacing and never shouting or being to excited for the characters. nice easy listening for a Grim future.

Up front, If you are not a fan of Warhammer 40.000, I can't say if you'll enjoy this as much. Look to the Eisenhorn series for the best introduction to the 40k universe instead...

A high octane pump of intrigue, mystery and action. Contains some or the best performances I've heard. Held me in it's grip thoroughly, simply loved it !

Masterpiece

I love inquisition books. That being said, I was a little disappointed. Covenant is not a very interesting character so far, but the story arch is interesting. It has great potential for a trilogy

great performance not a great story

It had a good story, the characters were ok though not very compelling. I'll finish the series as I already started. The narrator was outstanding as usual

not bad

I do have to confess my favorite inquisitor stories are the Eisenhorn/Ravenor series, but this was a good listen, and I liked the characters. Would recommend it.

Decent Story and good intro to the 40k setting

I liked it. Nothing beats the Eisenhorn novels but this was a very good try.

Not Eisenhorn-good but close enough

I enjoyed learning more of the Inquisition in Warjammer 40k. Enjoyable presentation. I have started Part 2.

This is weird, but this book just didn't work for me as an audiobook. I absolutely could not get into it, and was ready for it to end. This isnt a criticism of the performance of the Reader, who did a fantastic job, and whose voices for all the characters was great. I believe this story needs to be read, not heard, to really absorb what is happening, because the audiobook keeps moving the story forward at too quick a pace.

The story itself was a little formulaic. Inquisitors are hunting down a terrible threat, but are always one step behind until the big reveal and showdown. Its been done too many times. With that said, if you are looking to get into 40K novels, this is a good starting point because it showcases how big the universe is, and how decrepit the functions of the imperium really are.

Honestly was not expecting the book to be so good. Been 9n tge Dan train and had a hard time finding 40k books as good as his. But this really stood out!

Was a great surprise!

I get it, the warp is unknowable and whacky and all that, but just using craploads of contradictory words whenever someone is having some warp based mental break is waaaaaaaay overdone in this book and makes me wanna tune out.

Story is way to far up its own arse with the warp.
