About this listen

In 1886 New York, a respectable architect shouldn't have any connection to the notorious gang of thieves and killers that rules the underbelly of the city. But when John Cross' son racks up an unfathomable gambling debt to Kent's Gents, Cross must pay it back himself. All he has to do is use his inside knowledge of high society mansions and museums to craft a robbery even the smartest detectives won't solve. The take better include some cash, too - the bigger the payout, the faster this will be over. With a newfound talent for sniffing out vulnerable and lucrative targets, Cross becomes invaluable to the gang. But Cross's entire life has become a balancing act, and it will only take one mistake for it all to come crashing down - and for his family to go down too.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Jeff Woodman just gets better and better as this complicated story, set in New York City in 1886, unfolds.... Woodman's top-notch performance makes this audiobook fun." ( AudioFile)

I loved the adeptly narrated and carefully crafted plot of a respectable architect and his high society family drawn to a life of crime; development of high and low class characters living in late 1800s New York City interwoven with descriptions of both The urban landscape and detailed architectural features.

Stellar story and narration

Elements of Gangs of New York, The Fountainhead, Newsies, The Gilded Age, and Saboteur combine to make this a clever and unique novel. A great read!!!!

What a Ride!!!!

I had high hopes for this as it started out capturing my attention and the main plot line was promising. However, it began bashing the reader over the head with the class conflict of the time. I get it after the first ten mentions. Stop wasting my time. And then after all the racism and eugenics displayed by the family, the entire group succumbs to temptations? Granny is smoking opium? Give me a break. It was all extremes throughout which had me rooting against them all and nearly giving up on the book.

Annoying characters and outrageous plot.

This book fell far short of the Paris Architect, which prompted me to purchase this audible. Don’t waste a credit on it! Such an improbable plot and ending… very disappointing. Narrator was so-so, not the best.

Very disappointing.
