It was okay.

Please note: my rating is reviewed on a personal learning basis, and not based on the content (nor narrator) itself. Everything she says in this book is absolutely true and proven. She *does* know what she’s talking about.

I’ve been an author for almost two years now. I wouldn’t say I’ve done a ton of marketing research - I don’t lay in bed reading articles and marketing books such as this by any means. My research is more in spurts and as needed.
That being said, most of the information in this book I already knew about and often (and I mean often) I’d fast forward the audio. I didn’t learn anything new, besides her take on giveaways (which I definitely took note). I think this book is more suitable for those just beginning and those trying to find their place among the author world and business industry, and not those who have already have found where they snuggly fit.
If you’re struggling with that aspect, if you honestly don’t know what to do before or after you hit “publish”, then this book is for you.
If you have an inkling of understanding of how to attract readers (giveaways, permafreebie the main point), of how to attract subscribers (through giveaways and permafreebies), of where to put your books (smashwords, Amazon, apple, etc), then this isn’t for you.

I honestly didn’t find any of her “secret success” that kept being hinted at or by what the cover/title portrays. I can find more detailed successful stories on a large fb group I follow. Most, if not all, of this information can be found free on blogs or by simply asking another author friend. However, if you’re new to marketing (and I thought I was until I read this and sort of patted myself on the back for nodding “yep yep” along with it), and you want it all in one place, grab this book.

Please note authors: if you’re looking for a quick fix success, there’s no such thing. Good luck finding it. Everything stated in this book, and any book you pick up under this subject worth a dang, will all tell you to dig your feet in and prepare to work your butt off. Get used to that idea now.

A Must Read For Every Author

How I wish I had access to all those tips before incurring thousands of dollars of unnecessary costs that went down the drain.
Alinka is a great mentor and coach. She takes time in explaining the topic and follows up on inquiries when authors connect with her.

Endless lists read aloud, some good tidbits buried

I may have been disappointed because I expected so much from someone getting so much mainstream media coverage. There are juicy tidbits buried, but here are some of the major problems with this book:
1] Poor production values. Listening on my iPhone, iPad, and in my car, I noticed major audio/volume drops at the start of the beginning chapters. This improved near the end.
2] Endless lists and URLs read aloud. The narrator began to sound like one of those mechanical car navigation devices, Siri, or Alexa. Her voice is clear, her pronunciation faultless, it's simply difficult to make endless citations, lists, URLs and data read aloud sound interesting.
3] Because the author is painting with a VERY broad brush, her endless lists of contests and other promo methods she's used turned a good half of this book into an endless commercial. (Much like the "drip" campaign she offered that turned into an annoying torrent of hard sell of courses and programs she's sponsoring. But I digress.) Unless you're a children's book author, little of the information is genre specific of necessity.
4] Unless you have assistants, paid or unpaid, much of what she suggests should be analyzed for return on investment. I'm in the U.S. so your mileage may vary if you're in another country.

Unless you are sight challenged, my recommendation would be to go with a version other than audio IF you believe the information will be of use to you. The endless contest lists and URLs are things you'll either want to bookmark or flip over entirely, depending on where you are in your publishing career and what genre your work falls into.

Again, there are some nuggets buried if you can stay awake through the rest.

It truly pains me to give lower marks to a book I had such high hopes for. Especially as, “I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”

The book is very thorough

I liked that the book discussed things that I didn't know about and things I'd forgotten about.

Lots of good information, you will want to get the ebook too!.

This is a Non-Fiction title by Alinka Rutkowska.

♥ Story ♥

I actually had already purchased this title in ebook format through the kindle store. It was and currently still is free. I was happy to see this come up through the AudiobookBoom program. I can now how the audio to go with my kindle edition! It's nice to have someone read to you, but you are going to want to pick up the ebook version too for all the references, links, as well as a convenient place to make and store notes.

How I Sold 80,000 Books is full of information that I will definitely be putting to use when I get the courage to publish my own stories! The meat and potatoes of this book focus on what the author refers to as 'the four Ps', Product, Place, Price and Promotion. Each 'P' is covered in detail as well as speaking of how they can and often do overlap.

There is sound advice and incites to be learned from this title for sure. I don't know how many books you will sell after you listen or read this title, but you will have a better understanding of what more you could be doing to help with your bottom line.

♥ Author ♥

This is my 1st read/listen by Alinka Rutkowska. This is her only audio title, but what a good one. She writes this non-fiction title in a somewhat informal manner as if she is speaking directly to you. It makes you feel as if she is giving you advice as opposed to teaching a class.
Alinka has 01 titles listed on Audible.

♥ Narrator(s) ♥

This is my 1st listen by Nikki Delgado. She has an accent, which I like, but can be a turn-off to others. She completely captures the author's informal style. The production speed seemed a bit too fast to me, but an edit to 0.90 in Audible's handy narration speed tool fixed it right up.
Nikki has 03 titles listed on Audible.

Very Informative, but need Ebook for all the URLs

This book covers everything a beginning self-publishing author would need with lists of websites spanning from book awards to places to publish. It's a good introduction and a good reference in the ebook form. The bonus section at the end is good listening. It is a series of interviews from six trail-blazing self-published authors. Recommended.

Great Resource for Beginner Authors

Any beginner authors who are new to the book publishing business will find this book to be a great resource. There are all kinds of pointers and information about marketing and all of the things that someone who just finished writing their first book probably isn't thinking of. If you are ready to publish your first book, this should be one of the first things you listen to.

Narrator was decent, but there were a couple rough spots. Overall, after a few more books, this narrator will be as good as any other.

I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.

Good for Independent Authors

This is a good guide for Independent authors. This is not for me because I'm going to traditionally publish.

Exclent information for any budding author

From the outside looking in this book was more a novelty than a real need to know for myself. My main drive was curiosity, and to that extent I can honestly say I was delightfully pleased. If nothing else the way Alinka Rukowska lays out an authors options for selling their book is impressive and had venues I wouldn't have ever thought of. The narrator seems enjoyably English and is easy to follow along with despite the occasional web link somewhat ruining the cadence of the book. My one gripe for the book is that I believe the first 10 minutes could be hacked off and nothing of value would have been lost. It contains the reviews from different places, which while with a physical copy can be interesting and get you to buy it, in an audiobook seems more like needless filler in a book that is pretty tightly woven otherwise.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Very Mixed Feelings.

What did you like best about How I Sold 80,000 Books? What did you like least?

I liked that there was some actionable advice in the book.
I disliked the fact that the first 11:30 of the book was nothing but blurbs about the book. I already have the book, please stop selling me on it.
Also, having the narrator read URLs is excruciating. It made it very difficult to get through the book. All the links should be placed in an accompanying PDF and the narrator can reference it. It's not feasible for people to transcribe URLs when driving walking etc.

What does Nikki Delgado bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nikki did a serviceable job with a difficult prospect.

Any additional comments?
