A fake engagement and plenty of charm keep listeners entranced in this delightful Regency romance, which the USA Today best-selling author Julia Quinn hails as "terrific".
"I have come to ask you to kill me, my lord."
Miss Abigail Abbott desperately needs to disappear - permanently - and the only person she trusts to help her do that is Lord Stephen Wentworth, heir to the Duke of Walden. Stephen is brilliant, charming, and - when he needs to be - absolutely ruthless. So ruthless that he proposes marriage instead of "murder" to keep Abigail safe.
Stephen was smitten the instant his sister introduced him to Abigail, a woman with the dignity and determination of a duchess and the courage of a lioness. When she accepts his courtship of convenience, he also discovers she kisses like his most intimate wish come true. For Abigail, their arrangement is a sham to escape her dangerous enemies. For Stephen, it's his one chance to share a lifetime with the lady of his dreams - if only he can convince her his love is real.

Abigail has come to Stephen for help, she needs to disappear and she asks him to kill her and not in reality. Stephen suggests a different way to keep her safe and that is an engagement between them. As they work together to get evidence as to why someone is trying to hurt her they grow so much closer. Stephen reveals to her how he was younger, angry at the world and he explored his sexuality with women and even men. Abigail was understanding. I loved the way Grace exposed some of Stephen and how he felt especially him killing Jack. A wonderful story and series. This is a series I will read over and over again. writing and her stories.

I like the sequence of events, it flows fairly naturally and realistically. The characterization of most characters was pretty solid for the most part. The multiple povs were with purpose and i appreciated the representation of the various couples.
The story does have some glaringly weak points though. The “villain” has no characterization other than being an awful person. Both feel like a caricatures. There are quite a few aspects and extra details, typically character related, that make the story feel cluttered in certain places to me. They detract from the substance of the story. I think the effort was to further characterization but these added details, such as the heroine being a quaker, never made sense to me or hit home. Another weak point is the dialogue. Another thing that detracted for me was the moments in the story where the heroine would need to assert her independence and capability. This would have been perfectly fine if it hadn’t of been pointed out so obviously. Its not too bad for the most part, but some scenes between the male lead and the heroine are super cringe to listen to.
It wasn’t a bad experience and i think the author did a pretty good job for the most part. I may look her up again when i am in the mood for a fluffy story.
Equal parts good and equal parts weak
