So much more than the title suggests

Eloquently describes the pitfalls of judgment and how it leads to the destruction of self and relationships. The book really helped me understand how I relate to the world around me, mis-placed identity, and reasons why we allow pain to turn into suffering. James consistently used scripture to back up his many points and was incredibly thorough. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to live in freedom, free of judgement.

Amazingly Simple Truth

The truth in this book will change lives. I needed the simple explanation and gentle guidance of how to not dwell in hurt. When we choose to focus on Jesus and His love for us instead of ourselves and our problems only then can we escape the blindness of being caught up in our circumstances and live our lives for Him and full of love for others.

Wow! Just wow!

This book is not for the faint of heart. It is intense and direct. Be sure to start with an open mind. I would have told you I did, but early on I found myself challenged, and maybe a touch defensive, by this fresh perspective on the pain I feel in relationships. The idea that some pain, if not most, is somewhat self-inflicted was kind of off-putting at first. Keep listening!

There will be new concepts and perspective presented that are so valuable! He refers to many passages in the bible that I have heard for years, in a passive or dismissive way, with a new perspective that makes so much more sense in the context of this presentation. I’m not going to defend one perspective over another (as that is between the reader and God), but I can say that for me, I feel more love and less judgement from those verses. He doesn’t shy away from owning our mistakes and actions in any way. In fact, he draws an amazing line between our actions and the judgement we may receive from others or ourselves. It goes the other way too. Actions and our perceptions of those actions are not the same, and to make them the same tends toward judgement and pain. Such a great book.

As a person who has experienced both sides of judgement, given and received, this book is changing me. I will read it many times as the content is that deep. In recovery, safety is often spoken about so we can be comfortable with sharing our struggles. This book deepens and strengthens my resolve to remove judgement from every situation so God can do his work in the lives of us all.

Read this and be prepared for a heart change. I don’t think this can be read and not be affected.

An ever-so-slight minus, as either the sound mixer (or whatever audio person) made the audio quiet and slightly ‘bass’ey. Sure, the reader has a low pitched voice (very soothing), but there are just ‘things’ that tended to be out of balance in the mix. Nit-picky, yes. But just be aware you may need to adjust your volume higher than expected, and may want to adjust your EQ settings to get it just right for you. :)
