About this listen

Scream meets Happy Death Day in this terrifying young adult horror novel from New York Times bestselling scream queen Danielle Valentine.

"This terrifying book reads like a horror movie. No, wait. It has the suspense and shocks and screams of TEN horror movies in one. Great nasty fun!" —R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps and Fear Street

Alice Lawrence is the sole witness in her sister’s murder trial.

And in the year since Claire’s death, Alice’s life has completely fallen apart. Her parents have gotten divorced, she’s moved into an apartment that smells like bologna, and she is being forced to face her sister’s killer and a courtroom full of people who doubt what she saw in the corn maze a year prior.

Claire was an all-American girl, beautiful and bubbly, and a theater star. Alice was a nerd who dreamed of becoming a forensic pathologist and would rather stay at home to watch her favorite horror movies than party. Despite their differences, they were bonded by sisterhood and were each other’s best friends.

Until Claire was taken away from her.

On the first day of the murder trial, as Alice prepares to give her testimony, she is knocked out by a Sidney Prescott look-alike in the courthouse bathroom. When she wakes up, it is Halloween night a year earlier, the same day Claire was murdered. Alice has until midnight to save her sister and find the real killer before he claims another victim.

Red Harrings GALORE

Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was listening. The last half of the book, I couldn’t stop listening. I went on an extra walk a day to finish it! I was NOT expecting that ending!!!!

Good story

I had a hunch what was going on early in the book but I still enjoyed it and was along for the ride.

ending sucks

I was really disappointed by the ending. It ruined the whole book for me. It gave me more questions than anything and did not give me a good feeling when I was done. Plus, is there going to be another one or just end it like that??

Spoiler Alert

Loved the author not giving us the ending we expected and gave us somewhat of "cliff hanger" as in where does it go from here? Will there be a book 2 or will there just be this ending.... You see where the author is leading you and you have several different possibilities to latch on to and you will be suspicious of one if not all the possible suspects. Worth the read and for a me a change in my typical listen/reads.

Great potential...but meh ending

I loved the premise even if I've heard "the rules of the horror movie" before so it isnt new in a groundbreaking way, I like the adaptation.
It makes for a great framing for the book, and allows for the nreaking of the 4th wall (conversations with the audience) without it really feeling comedic.

the buildup is awsome. the stagesetting, the first wave of action i loved it. the pieces fit and the story flows really well in a mix of all things holy to horror and what I felt is a great narration.

I love that there are so many twists, so many "But for's" and so many new things that appear. it is easy to get lost in how the events really udfolde.

all that being great - the end...say the last 1.5h have me rattled. it felt somehow too frantic...so I kinda zoned out? it was too crescendo but with no "umpf" at the end. I am not rightly sure I understood what happended, as a matter of fact.

Narration i felt spot on for the type of book - a young (american) horror nerd - think Jessica from Twilight. I felt that the emotions and the thought processes were nailed. especially the nerdy quality vs. the sheer terror of it all was really well executed.
It felt well paced, very few "errors" (changing accents, omitting breathing and pauses...that sort of thin).

So fun

This was a fun and far read. I seriously was guessing (questioning everyone) and couldn’t turn this book off. And that ending. Woah!

Great twists!

I really enjoyed this story line. Groundhog Day, Halloween, & Happy Death day all rolled into one. Thought I had it figured out but was way off base. Well done.
