About this listen

Vince Carver left the CIA with a dead friend and a close call. So much for so-called intelligence work. No longer knowing what he was fighting for, Carver switched to the private sector and swore he'd never go back. Armed with the elite skills of a special operator, he now leads a team of security specialists far from the battlefield. But everything changes when his convoy is ambushed on American soil. The three-letter agencies all want a piece of him, and the CIA is front and center.

His client, a semiconductor billionaire, may be selling secrets to the Chinese. As his bodyguard, Carver is the asset best placed to uncover the plot, and he begrudgingly commutes to Taipei for one last mission. Soon he's embedded in a world of slick intrigue and fast lies. Carver is pitted against a resident security team led by a beautiful and enigmatic woman, but she's far from the only one keeping secrets. When foreign agents gun for him, old doubts resurface, and not even the CIA is above suspicion.

Carver rediscovers his drive to fight. He may be guarding secrets vital to US national security, but he's a private contractor to the bone. This is Carver's show, and he knows the key to a timeless truth. When best-laid plans fall by the wayside, nothing can replace the indifferent precision of a man with a gun.

Good research, realistic and riveting. I do not write a lot of reviews on this forum, but I wanted to thank Matt Sloane for a job well done. I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

Well read, interesting characters, different locations including overseas, clean language, good ethics on the part of the main characters. I enjoyed it!

Keeps you guessing

At the end, the main character has it very easy. No real issues with foiling the plot, would have liked some more fighting back but overall a great listen

Great start. Could have been longer

Good plot, closely related to reality in a current state of affairs. Knowledgeable writer who did their research.

I really enjoyed it overall and burned through it in 2 days. my only critique is the quality of the narration. the narrator was mostly good but felt a little flat at times. the audio quality was odd and sounded like it was over compressed or the mic was too hot.

overall it's a great story that felt modern and current. I immediately bought the second book and look forward to the rest of the Vince Carter saga

smart and realistic spy thriller

Story kept my attention and it was believable in the way that all covert stories are.

Good story

Flat, one dimensional characters set in a cliched plot. If you want a better listen head to Jeffery Wilson and Brian Andrews.

Cliche

An “ok” storyline but the reader is really boring and speaks in a monotone. Would listen to more by the author but NOT this reader. If author wants this series to succeed get Scott Brick or someone similar.

Needs better reader.
