About this listen

Rene Thompson has been waiting all year for Negro Achievement Day. It falls on the second Monday in October. This is the one day that Negros get to go to the state fair. Mama has been telling her that when she is 10 years old, she will be old enough to go; this is the age when you can answer questions if you happen to get lost. Rene is worried that the nosy neighbors and the good church folks are doing everything possible to convince her father that it is too dangerous for Negros to travel to Dallas. The issue of going would be settled if it weren't for all the talk about protests, riots, and marching. Will Rene finally be able to go to the fair?

Full of humor and heartbreak, I Want To Go recalls the account one young black girl's experience with the State Fair of Texas and Dallas in 1965. What the audio recording may have lacked in refinements, the story itself compensated for me. A recommended listen.

Great story.

I heard the author during an interview on the radio, here in Dallas and immediately downloaded it. Not knowing all the details, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the stories of family, trials and the love required during such a time…NOT TOO LONG AGO.

We aren’t very far removed from some of these situations and certainly have many more strides to improve how we treat one another.

Thank you for this Denise Montgomery!

This book is excellently written. African American history is riddled throughout the story. The story depicts a strong African American family that is lead by a committed and loving father. It is an engaging read. It leaves you wanting to hear more.
